Spam emails seem to be bypassing the Inmotion McAfee plugin

I've been receiving tons of spam to my primary email in the past few months. I installed the McAfee plugin. I notice that the same spam emails seem to be bypassing McAfee. When I view the Message Audit tap in the McAfee Control Console, a large bulk of the spam emails (and a few that are not spam) do not show on this list. How do I figure out how the emails are getting to my inbox on my Outlook account on my PC? And then how do I make sure they are passing through the McAfee plugin and mark them as spam?

Hello Rynoburger,

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having with spam emails. The problem here might be one of definition. What you may be identifying as spam may not be considered as spam by the tools that you're using. You may need to have other filters or spam options (such as Spam Assassin) fine tuning the search so that your "definition" of spam emails can be used to filter emails that hit your inbox. Check out our section on dealing with spam for further information on the tools we provide in cPanel. You may also need to change the settings within the tools that you are using. For example, spam assassin can be set to be very conservative (identifying less spam) to very restrictive (identifying MORE emails as spam). If you feel that the tool is failing , then you may need to address the authors of McAfee directly or at least speak with their support for further assistance.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Arnel C.

Arnel, thank you. What setting in spam assassin is more restrictive? The default is 5. I think mine is set on 4. Do I set it to a lower number or higher number? Regarding the McAfee plugin provided by Inmotion, there doesn't seem to be a support number to contact on how to customize it. The strange part is what I indicated in my post. Some emails are not showing up in the message audit which means they are bypassing it somehow and they are the same spam emails I am getting day in and day out over and over again. Things like seniorsoulmates, student debt forgiveness, trackr, solar panel rebates, etc. Things that have nothing to do with my business.

Hello rynoburger,

Thank you for contacting us. Yes, a lower number in Spam Assassin will catch more spam. If it is getting through the filter, it may not be reaching the minimum score to be flagged (for example getting 4.9 out of 5 would let it through).

We have a full Education Channel on using McAfee Email Protection. You can contact Live Support if you have any additional McAfee questions.

Also, it may be helpful to review the email logs for any issues/errors (Live Support can help you with that).

Thank you,
John-Paul
