Question about beefing up security of the website

Avi Nadel 2 weeks ago in Technical Support / Security updated by Arnel C (Content Marketing Coordinator) 2 weeks ago 2

Our website was just hacked and we were told that it will take 24-48 hours to do a system restore to the time before we were hacked. Does anyone have any advice as to what measures could be done to avoid being hacked in the future?

TLS 1.2 support

davidtorr 2 months ago in Technical Support / Security updated by Alyssa K 2 months ago 1

Chrome has just started to flag our site with

The
connection used to load this site used TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1, which are
deprecated and will be disabled in the future. Once disabled, users will
be prevented from loading this site. The server should enable TLS 1.2
or later.

The site now shows as "Not secure" with chrome. Firefox seems OK

Hello davidtorr,

Thank you for your question regarding security warnings. It appears that your SSL certificate has expired and you will likely need to reinstall the SSL certificate or install a new one. This can be done via cPanel as per the following instructions:

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/cpanel/add-delete-autossl-cpanel/

If you continue to experience issues with this, I recommend contacting our Technical Support team for direct assistance.

Hello ranjeet,

Thank you for your question regarding site security. If you are still getting the "Site Not Secure" warning, it likely means that you have links on your site that are still using HTTP instead of HTTPS. You will want to review your image and page links to ensure that all internal links are using HTTPS instead of HTTP.

Hello Duncan,

Thank you for your question regarding server security. As the exact features available will differ depending on the hosting plan you use, I recommend reviewing the hosting plans found here:

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/vps-hosting

Once you have decided which plan you are interested in, you can contact a Sales Representative to learn more about the security features available to that specific plan.

Why does my force HTTPS/SSL redirect edit cause a 500 error?

kaweah 3 months ago in Technical Support / Security updated by Chris M (Content Marketing Coordinator) 6 days ago 1

Hi. I'd like to force my main domain and all subdomains to use SSL, so I inserted the following code at the top of my root .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/[0-9]+..+.cpaneldcv$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/.well-known/pki-validation/[A-F0-9]{32}.txt(?: Comodo DCV)?$
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.kaweah.com/$1 [R,L]

Unfortunately, this edit causes all hits to my site to error out as follows:

Error 500 - Internal Server Error

An error was encountered while processing your request. Typically this is a temporary condition. Please contact the web site owner for further assistance.

Any idea where my mistake is?

Thanks!

Answer

Hello! I ran this by one of the senior technicians, who pointed out that you're missing escape characters on some spaces.

(?: Comodo DCV)?$

should be

(?:\ Comodo\ DCV)?$

as spaces need to be escaped when writing .htaccess.

While i was confirming the 500 error, the technician pointed out that, while this will force visitors to the https version of  your site, you are still going to have to worry about image links and other links using http instead of https. If you are on a WordPress site, I would suggest using a plugin like Really Simple SSL. This will take care of the .htaccess and also make sure your links are good to go. Either way, I hope that helps!

Hello ahsan,

Thank you for your question regarding site security. It is likely that your site is using a self-signed SSL. I recommend reviewing the following guide the explains how to resolve this issue:
