How to Change your root Password in WHM

It’s best practice to rotate all your passwords on a regular basis. It’s important to maintain security for your root password due to the access root provides to your server. Having root access on a Linux server is similar to having administrator access on a Windows computer.

You must have root access to your server to update the root password.

Changing your Root Password in WHM

  1. Log into WHM.
  2. Select Server Configuration from the main menu.
  3. Select “Change Root Password.”

    change root password in WHM

  4.  Enter your new root password (twice) and select “Change Password.”

It’s important that you notify InMotion Hosting of your new root password since it is in the agreement you accepted when you requested root access to the server.

  1. Hello,

this does not work.   I want to change to root password to something intelligible that I can remember.  How do I do this?   I can change from the AMP menu not the WHM menu.

    1. Hello Saad,

This is only available for those that have had their root access activated. Have you done that yet?

      Kindest Regards,

    2. Hello Saad,

It sounds like the WHM thinks you are not logged in as the root user. If you are certain you are using ‘root’ as your login and still not seeing the correct things, you will want to contact our Live Support so they can take a look at the account with you and correct any problem.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M
