Recently receiving spam email

In the past several months, I started receiving spam email. I had never received it before, so I thought it was odd at the time. Since then, it has steadily increased, even though I went in to make sure the spam assassin was activated. Any suggestions on why I suddenly have it, and what I can do to get rid of it?
