Secure Server

I would like to setup my "business class" hosting secured server to use https and not

http://secure123.inmotionhosting.com/~username/site_directory/

which I've seen in the FAQs.

Why?
1) Facebook will not allow this type of directory structure for a facebook app. It has to be https://www.yourdomain.com/

2) it doesn't work for my add-on domain. I get an error as if the page doesn't exist. Maybe it's because the directory structure doesn't work with wordpress and probably other add-ons.

I've talked with Support, apparently, there is no other way without purchasing a dedicated SSL certificate.

I guess, I would turn this "question" into more of a suggestion. I would like to suggest that domains be able to access the shared SSL via https://www.yourdomain.com

Hi btsander,

Thanks for posting your question. I'm more than happy to assist you. SSLs are generated based on the domain name. It's a security feature. We provide access on shared servers through HTTPS because we have purchased an SSL for the temp url of the server. There is no other way to use HTTPS other than purchasing an SSL.

Truthfully, allowing SSL access to every domain would require InMotion Hosting to purchase a SSL certificate for every domain on the server and dramatically increase the cost of hosting.

This means the costs would have to be passed on the the customer increasing their overall costs. Since not every customer requires an SSL, it makes more sense to offer SSL certificates as an additional option, and keep costs lower for the consumer.

If you need further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thanks!
