FTP instructions not working to upload site files

I need to upload a bunch of theme files to my website and need to ftp not cPanel them.
I tried the FileZilla using the configuration file for secure connection generate by Inmotion but it could not connect. here is the response:
Response: fzSftp started, protocol_version=5
Command: open "[email protected]@ftp.xxxxxx.com" 22
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error: Could not connect to server
Then I tried CoreFTP, again with the Inmotion generated config file. Again no success:
Resolving ftp.xxxxxx.com...
ftp.xxxxxxxxx.com [22] connecting...
SFTP connection error - Connection timed out
Can't establish connection --> ftp.xxxxxxx.com:22 @ Mon May 09 21:11:03 2016 (10038-10060)

I need to be able to use secure ftp to upload these files.

Hello cobbsb6, Thank you for contacting us about setting up SFTP in Filezilla. I regret to hear you're having connection difficulties. Judging from the error above it looks like Filezilla is trying to connect on port 22. Did you set the configuration in Filezilla to port 2222 and get the same result?
