Can anyone tell me the difference, if there is any, between a virtual private server and a virtual dedicated server?

Thank you!

Technically there is no such thing as a "virtual dedicated server" and "virtual private server" is the correct terminology. Many providers use VPS to refer to virtual servers that are running on a shared kernel using OpenVZ or KVM (usually Linux, so they can only run Linux-based OSs (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Fedora, etc)) while VDS refers to something in VMWare or some similar software that offers true hardware virtualization and can run any OS (Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc). Another common usage for VDS is to refer to a VPS with guaranteed or dedicated hardware resources instead of shared resources; if the VDS guarantees 2 CPUs at 1Ghz each, you will get that even if the host system is overloaded, whereas on a non-dedicated VPS you might experience fluctuations in performance based on server load from other shared VPS users.

Googleplex, Virtual Private Server (VPS) is the proper wording. I don't believe there is such a thing as a virtual dedicated server- it would be the same thing as the virtual private server. The whole point of a "dedicated" server is that the processor and memory are all yours. In many server farms these days, this may amount to a "blade" or rack mount unit. VPS are basically virtual systems that share the hardware, but the OS is separated (virtually- through the OS) into units with a certain amount of memory (RAM and hard drive space). Multiple VPSs can be on the same server sharing CPU. If you're looking for further information about the VPS and Dedicated server, check out this page, or call into our sales department and they can give you a much clearer definition of our hosting systems: VPS Hosting Dedicated Hosting If you have any further questions, please contact technical support available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.
