SSL self-signed cert question

I have generated self-signed cert in cPanel and "install" it (press approp. button in cPanal form).
Should it work and https:// should operate ? because it doesnt and from Chrome I see zero-length response.
Is it a error or I should make some exta step (e.g. buy static IP address ? because I use ordinal shared hosting)?

Alternatively - shared SSL cert (e.g. https://secure999.inmotionhosting.com/~user777/) should work any way, right ?
