How to Set Up Email on a Galaxy S Phone

You can use your Samsung Galaxy phone to check the email account for your domain hosted with InMotion Hosting. You can add multiple email accounts to your phone so you can be sure to stay connected for work or personal purposes. The steps below were taken on a Samsung Galaxy S Blaze device from T-Mobile. Your particular phone may be different, but the steps should be somewhat similar.

If you are unsure what your email settings are, you can find them with our Email Configuration tool.

Setting up Email on a Galaxy Phone

  1. Click on your Mail icon on the front screen of the phone. If you cannot locate the Mail icon on your screen, touch the Applications icon in the lower right corner and then you should be able to find it.
  2. If you have yet to set up an email account on your phone, you will be taken to a screen with two fields. Enter your email address in the top field and the password in the lower field. After you have entered the correct information, touch the Manual Settings button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. You will be taken to a screen that gives you three option buttons: POP3 Account, IMAP Account, or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. Select your desired setup by touching the appropriate button. For InMotion Hosting customers, you can select either POP3 or IMAP, but not the Microsoft Exchange option. We recommend IMAP for setting up email accounts on a phone, however. You can learn the difference between POP3 and IMAP protocols here.
  4. After making your selection, you will see a page that asks for several fields of information.IMAP Settings
User NameEnter your FULL email address, even though the preset does not have the entire address. For example: [email protected]
PasswordEnter the password for the email account.
IMAP ServerIf your domain is pointed to our servers, then use that (ie: example.com) If your domain is not pointed to us, then use your server name (ie: biz108.inmotionhosting.com)
PortThis is the port number the phone will use to connect to the server. Security type selection will determine what port number you want to put here. Reference the table below to find the correct port number.
    Security Type
The type of security the phone uses to talk to the server. Note that InMotion servers do not differentiate between SSL and TLS settings, so using SSL is the same as TLS.

TLS (Accepts All Certificates)Transport Secure Layer Protocol used. Automatically accepts all secure certificates.993
IMAP Path Prefix Leave this field empty as it is not in use with InMotion Hosting servers.

    POP3 Settings

When I delete from InboxLeaves email on the server unless you delete it from your phone’s Inbox.

Once you have entered your settings, touch the Next button found at the bottom of the screen.

Your phone will now check the incoming settings with the server to ensure they are correct and that it can connect. Once it has been confirmed, you will be taken to the next screen.

  5. This screen is your Outgoing Server Settings screen and will be the same whether you use POP3 or IMAP in the previous step. There are a few fields on this page which are important for sending mail through our servers.
SMTP ServerUnless you have a custom third party SMTP server, you will simply use the same server name as you did for POP3 or IMAP settings.

User NameAs with the incoming server, use your entire email address.
PasswordThe password for the email address.

Once you have set the Outgoing settings, click on the Next button to continue.

  6. This screen is the Account Options screen. This asks for a couple of last minute details about the frequency of checking emails and whether you want a notification when new email arrives. As always, click the Next button when finished.
  7. The last screen is the Set Up Email screen. Here you will give the mail account a name. This name is just an identifier used on your Android phone. You will also be asked for the name you want to display on outgoing emails. Once you have completed this task, click on the Done button and you are all set to send and receive email using your Samsung Galaxy phone!

  1. I am trying to set up my email on a Samsung Galaxy S10 & followed the instructions. Keep receiving the following message: Couldn’t verify account, pop3.jimlanders.com isn’t responding. I was able to successfully log into webmail so I know the password is correct. I used the settings found in my email account.

    1. If you’re using an InMotion Hosting account, then the URL used for POP3 is not correct. We use a different format to reference the account. You may need to add it manually. If you’re using a different service then you will need to ask them for either alternative or the proper email server setting. InMotion typically uses mail.your-domain-name.com or secure-server#.inmotionhosting.com (for the secure version of the mail server).

  2. Following these directions, I cannot get my email setup on my new Samsung Galaxy S9.  The error received:

“Couldn’t verify account.  A security connection error has occurred.”  You don’t recommend any, so I just selected SSL.  The ports you show are the ones the phone selected by default, i.e. I didn’t have to change them.

I have no idea what to do next, to solve the problem.

    Please help.

    Thanks!

    1. Email settings that you would use in an email client, such as your smartphone can be found here. You will need to specify those settings in your phone if you’re going to select SSL.

  3. my same domain emails are working but out of domain is not working. like seding sending gmail account is not working. any advice. this is only on samsung glaxy?

    1. I recommend reviewing your outgoing or SMTP settings if you are experiencing issues sending any emails. You would need to refer to your device manufacturer’s documentation to do that. Otherwise, you can try to remove and re-add the email accounts that are not working properly.

  4. Hi,

I’m trying to setup email on my Galaxy S 6 phone and am getting the following error message, ” An incorrect username or password has been entered, or POP3/IMAP access is not turned on for this account. Check your acount settings or contact your service provider.” I have tripple confirmed my UN/Password and when I have gone into the cPanel I’m not seeing where I can turn on the POP3/IMAP.

Can you please assist with next steps.

    Thank you.

    1. Ensure you are entering the full email address for the username, including the @ symbol. As a test, try logging into WebMail. This will verify if IMAP is working since it is just an IMAP client.

If your phone is on wifi, turn it off and try to connect over the cellular network and vice-versa. This will rule out network issues.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  5. Set up for GalaxyS7 and followed the directions but not responding. Can’t find server. Do I use these settings or biz###.inmotionhosting.com

    Incoming IMAP: secure###.inmotionhosting.com

    outcoming STMP: secure###.inmotionhosting.com

    1. I’m sorry to see you’re receiving that error. Check out our article, How to Find Email Settings, to locate where this information is displayed for InMotion Hosting customers. Depending on whether you are using secure/nonsecure settings, you will use the settings listed in your cPanel. The article also provides generic settings but your cPanel will show you specific settings.

For your security, we will not post your specific settings in the public forum. Thank you for your understanding!

You can also reach out to our Live Support for further assistance with your email settings.

  6. Please update your Android instructions using this information.  I found the other page first, which didn’t help. This has the correct settings.

  7. Hi:

I am trying to set up the email for my new Samsung Galaxy S8. A couple of them went okay, but not the more obscure one that is hosted by AOL, but is “[domain redacted].com.” I’ve tried doing it per your directions above. Set it up in like how it works in my Samsung tablet. I even tried setting it up the way it worked in my now no longer used iPhone 6. Still no luck. I’ve used it with [domain redacted].com and the aol.com. (They’ve both been used in my other devices.) I’ve tried it with smtp and imap. I’ve tried it with all the security types available. I’ve tried it using none. Any other suggestions?

Incidentally, my 20+ year old aol emails worked just fine.

    1. The domain you mentioned appears to be pointing DNS to AOL. I advise checking to see if they recommend different login parameters than the ones listed above.

  8. Donna – You are a superstar !!

Thanks so much. After a great deal of frustration and gnashing of teeth setting up on my S6 your instructions finally got the email set up to work.

It was very kind of you to share and help us all out ..

    Cheers

  9. Im having trouble setting up my email. It was working just fine the other day and now i get this message: authentication failed. Please help

    1. An “authentication failed” error typically is caused by an incorrect username or password. I recommend double-checking your email settings for typos/misspellings. You can view your email settings in cPanel at any time.

If your problems persist, I recommend reviewing your mail logs for additional clues or record of the transmission.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    1. So a few things, port 993 is reserved for SSL. The host name you are using is not over HTTPS (ded1919.inmotionhosting.com) so you want to change the port to 143. Also the authentication error usually means the password/email doesn’t match. You’ll want to verify you are using the correct password for the email account you are connecting to.

  11. samsung s7 same as above for cpanel email wont work same error message as above

  12. I’ve had email set up for 3 years now but have never been able to set up/see the SPAM folder on my phone. See it on Outlook but not on phone. Any thoughts?

    1. Hello JT,

The Spam folder is an option folder that must be subscribed in order to see it. If you’re not sure how to subscribe to folders in your phone, you may need to see your carrier’s support people for assistance.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Kindest Regards,

    1. As a test, you can try using a different email client on your phone. There are quite a few available in the Play store.

If your problems persist, I recommend contacting yahoo to see if they can help you review your mail logs for additional clues (since your email is not hosted on our server I cannot access the logs).

  15. Hi Guys,

I have an S7 and I am trying to add my hotmail account to the standard Email app.

Adding Gmail was fine, addint my hotmail to the outlook app was fine, but when i add my hotmail account it remains on the screen saying “Checking incoming server setting” and does not proceed pass that.. just wondering whats going on?

    Regards,

    James

    1. Unfortunately, you’ll need to either contact Samsung or Hotmail. We cannot answer specific questions about their services since we’re not involved with them. Set up of an email on phone shouldnt take more than 5 minutes or so.

  16. i have a samsung galaxy note 2 with hotmail account on it then suddenly it stopped working, i could not send or receive from it so i deleted it and tried to setup it again as IMAP but i always get the message ”setup could not finish authentication failed”
although i wrote all the data correctly like my correct email in the field of email address and username and my password (which i renewed it on my pc and i dont have a 2 step verification process) and impap server: imap-mail.outlook.com and security type: ssl and port: 993
and i cleared the cache and data of the email applications from the settings of the phone
so what shall i do to solve this problem
    thanks

    1. If you are certain that your settings are correct, you will want to contact hotmail/outlook support. Also, see if you can set up from any other devices with the same information (other phone, tablet, desktop). If so, then the issue is with the phone. If not, then it is in the information. Either way, that is good info for the support team when you contact them.

  17. I have a galaxy S6 with Tmobile, and I couldn’t setup my yahoo email.  It keeps said “password or user is incorrect or need to go email setup to turn on IMAP/POP3 server”  I didn’t have any problem with my old phone galaxy S5.  Please advise.

    1. Verify your username and password are accurate, by logging into yahoo mail with them.

Ensure you are setup to use IMAP or POP3 protocol on your phone.

If you were hosting email on our servers I would check your mail logs.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  18. Thank you so very, very much for this article. I have been searching for a solution to my email problem off and on for months. The information you provided regarding the Port number for SSL and requiring sign in FINALLY after months solved my problem. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    1. Hello Janis,

We appreciate your response(s)! If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,

  19. I finally upgraded to a Galaxy S4 from the original galaxy.  On the original galaxy, there was an option for “SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates)”  using port 465 for the outgoing server.  This option does exist on the G4.

On the G4, the options are

    TLS(Accept all certificates) port 587

    and

SSL (Accept all certificates) port 465.

One would assume that the G4 is using TLS over SSL, but who knows.  In any case, I cannot connect to verizon with the security options given.  I’ve tried switching ports from 465 to 587 and vice versa.

The username and password suggestions are just blowing smoke.  There is an issue with security type and ports on the G4.

    1. Review your email settings to confirm they are accurate.

If you are on wifi, turn it off. If you are not on wifi, try and connect using it.

If your problems persist, review your mail logs for additional errors or record of your connection.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    1. An “Authentication failed” message typically means your username, or password is incorrect. I recommend checking them for typos or misspellings. You view your email settings in cPanel.

As a test, try to log in to webmail with your username and password. Be sure to use your full email address as the username.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  20. I have a Galaxy S5 and I kept getting email “Sign In Failed” notifications for half the day. I tried changing my password but that didn’t work. So I decided to delete the account and start over. Now when I try to set it back up it says “Unable To Set Up Account, Authentication Failed”. Can someone help me with this problem?

    1. This means you are not using the correct password. I suggest logging into cPanel and updating your email password.

  21. Hi,

i usually pick up my email from my desktop pc, i want to set up email on my samasung galaxy s5, it is a pop 3 account, i have tried entering all settings and doubled checked they are correct, i can recieve email but cannot send, can you help

  22. I set my first account very easily but now when I am trying to add a second account I receive the message: “Authentication Failed”, would you please let me know what to do?

    1. Authentication failed means that either the username, password, or connecting server information is incorrect.

  23. Ihave just recently started using a samsung s5, but can not ge  BT email on the phone as keep getting  “authentication failed”   can anyone help?

    1. Authentication failed means that the server you are trying to connect to is not recognizing either the username, the password, or the servername.

    2. the same problem as mine, I have Samsung Galaxy Note 4 unable to connect to server when i add my email account in our exchange server the configuration are correct, but i have no problem in other phone when i add my email account.

    3. I’m sorry we don’t work with exchange servers, so we can’t offer much advice. If you are a customer of ours, be sure to choose POP or IMAP.

  24. Hi all,

I’ve got the same “Authentication Failed” when adding my yahoo mail account on my  samsung Grand2 android phone, after trying a few days, at last yahoo send me an email, to follow below link (this part of the orginal message from yahoo):

    https://login.yahoo.com/account/security#other-apps

and turning off “Allow apps that use less secure sign in”.

I change by turning on the “Allow apps that use less secure sign in”, then all works fine. Yahoo want us to make a more secure connection to the mail server by using yahoo maill apps.

  25. I am getting issue while configuring Microsoft Office 365 ID on my Samsung Galaxy S4.

I can browse but cannot configure. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. Getting error Unable to connect or Unable to authenticate.

    Server setting using, outlook.office365.com

    And SSL User Secure Connection.

    Regards

    Parmod

    1. Hello Parmod,

Apologies with the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. This feature is usable only with the Microsoft Exchange mail server which we do not use or support. If you are hosting with a service that uses it, then you may need to speak with their support to determine why you are unable to configure.

I hope that helps to answer your question! If you require further assistance, please let us know!

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  26. I fixed my issue in a strange way.

I just about went insane trying to set up my two Gmail accounts on the Samsung email app after Verizon Message+ somehow screwed the accounts up.  I did three factory resets, cleared all of my Google backup data on both accounts, and emptied out my Verizon backup files online.  Nothing worked.  Obviously this was a major pain, as I had to reinstall all of my apps and re-do all of my settings.

Almost by accident, I tried verifying my Gmail account info in the Samsung email app while I was using 4G instead of being connected to my home wireless network.  It suddenly worked.

I have no idea why being on my network was keeping me from setting up my Gmail accounts.  I was having no issues whatsoever with my home network: all other apps and my laptop were connecteing to the internet just fine.  I had spent hours searching the web for solutions, none of which worked.  It was insanely frustrating.

  27. Tried everything and anything but it didn’t work for my Note 5. In the end downloaded CloudMagic app in Play Store. Setup in less than 5 minutes and everything is working again

    1. Hello Nicole,

Glad to hear CloudMagic worked for you! The email settings we provide are universal, so they can work with virtually any email client.

  28. I am unable to setup my work email on my Iphone or samsung s6. We dont use POP3 or IMAP, we use Microsoft exchange option. Everything finishes but it doesnt display any messages or sent item, page seems to be blank. I can access my emails on web browser but not on application of phone. I have tried all the application on phone to setup email. any suggestions?

    1. Hello Abhi,

You may need to contact the administrator of your exchange server to see if the logs are providing any information.

      Best Regards,
      TJ Edens

  29. Hi,

I setup to received mails and that works fine. Problem i have is everyday or sometimes during the day when I refresh my e-mail the old maild disappear from the phone and is not shown in the previously read mails either.

Can you tell me if there is some settings that I may have missed.

    thanks,

    Deo

    1. Hello Deo,

Be sure you do not have another device also set to check your mail using POP3. POP3 will remove all the emails from the server and download it to that device. Then, any other devices will not see those emails.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  30. Hi,

I have samsung galaxy note 2 gt-n7100. when I am configuring emails in MS outlook exchange its not enabling the option for pattern lock password. only single option we are getting to set a password which is “High Security Password”.

I am trying for this problem for last month.. but unable to get any satisfied result. pls help us on this.

    1. Hello Namita Rani,

Sorry for the problem with the configuration issues with your Exchange server and Galaxy phone. Unfortunately, we do not run Microsoft Exchange server here, and the issue with your phone would be better addressed by contacting Microsoft support. I did do an initial search for the subject you asked about, but it wasn’t explicitly clear on addressing that exact issue. You would probably best be supported by going to the Microsoft support forums.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  31. I got a new phone so I had to set up a new email. It took me forever to set up my new email. My phone said that there were no severs found. After I read this step-by-step process, my email was finally set up. Thank you so much!

    1. Hello Kristian,

I am glad this article worked for you on setting up your email client. Please let us know if you have any questions in the future.

      Best Regards,

  33. Galaxy note 4, Got an error message when tring to set up outgoing server settings “couldn’t open connection to surver”

    1. Hello Abdul,

Thank you for contacting us. First, I recommend confirming your email settings are correct, then there are several test you can perform.

If you are testing on your phone network, are you able to check via wi-fi? If you are using wi-fi, have you tried over your phone network? This will rule out a network block.

Also, try alternating your settings. For example if you are using the non-SSL settings, try the SSL settings instead. This causes your phone to use different ports, and can clear up issues.

If your problems persist, it may be easier to contact Live Support at the time you are testing, so they can review the mail logs for issues.

      Thank you,
      JohnPaul

  34. I am using Samsung S4 and keeps saying ‘unable to connect to emailserver to verify your account information. No response from sever’ I am a user of yahoo small business account and I am failing to set up on the said tablet. On security type, the s4 is not giving me the option of SSL/TLS and I cant proceede from there

    1. Hello Nicholson,

Are you able to set up an account at all without using TLS/SSL?

      Kindest Regards,

  35. the same issue as mine try to use Nine – Exchange Outlook Mail app downloaded in google play it’s work for my Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

  36. the same problem as mine, I have Samsung Galaxy Note 4 unable to connect to server when i add my email account in our exchange server the configuration are correct, but i have no problem in other phone when i add my email account.

Solution for my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is Nine – Exchange Outlook Mail app downloaded in googleplay.

  37. DONNA!!! you are sent by God! Thank you so much for your solution. After countless hours with inmotion trying to set up my clients’ phone email access from samsung s4’s built in email client, your solution worked in seconds where they simply didn’t solve anything. (sorry inmotion you really tried,  but please for the love of everything good just tell people to use Donna’s settings) In fact please give Donna a reward.  Thanks a million times!

    1. I TOO FOLLOWED THE ABOVE SETUP FOR EMAIL, BUT UNABLE TO SETUP AS GETTING ERROT IN INCOMING SERVER AS AUTHENTICATION FAILED. I AM DOING THIS ON GALAXY E7. PLZ HEPL TO SORT OUTNTHE ISSUE.

  38. Had a similar problem where Galaxy s3 worked fine but s5 would not authenticate. Found that I needed to put my full email address as user name in incoming and outgoing on S5 but on S3 this was not necessary. Also used company domain on email address but used gmail as domain on incoming and outgoing server information. Thank you for your hint as to what “authentictaion failed ment”  This clued me in to trying to fully define the user name in S5 even though my old phone works fine without it.  Hope this helps someone else.

  39. I’ve had this exact problem. My password is correct as I’ve logged in through hotmail.com via chrome with no issues but anytime I try an set up the same email I get “Authentication Failed”. I’m on a galaxy s4

    1. Hello Emma,

Unfortunately we have not found any other reason for that error message to date. We have tested on a full lineup of galaxy devices up to the Note 4 and have not had that issue. It is always the username or password as long as the proper server names have been entered. Check the username to ensure it is the full email address as well. Sometimes just the first part is entered and that can cause issues.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  40. I have been able to set up a gmail and hotmail email account on my ZTEMax Android phone but not my work email. I have tried multiple usernames, domains, server names and port numbers but always get the response “‘Unable to connect to server’ (3011)” . The tables above were very helpful but I keep getting this response. Any suggestions?

    1. Hello phillip,

Thank you for contacting us today. Since you have been trying different settings, I recommend contacting your email host and asking what specifically to use.

They may be using custom, or alternate settings based on their specific server configuration.

Also, they may be having an issue on the server, or can review the server logs of your incoming connections.

  41. I have a samsung galaxy s4 and I have followed the steps as indicated and I get a “authentication failed” message.  I know my email address and my password are correct. what is the problem.  This just started tday, I woke up to notifications that my email needed password verification and now it wont accept it.

    1. Hello S,

Thank you for contacting us. An “authentication failed” message means your username, or password is incorrect.

There are several things to check when this happens.

      • Make sure your domain did not expire. Your expiration date is listed in the public WHOIS record.
      • Since I have seen clients drop/change settings, double check your email settings for any issues, or mispellings.
      • Check with your host to ensure they did not modify your account. For example they may moved you to a new server, or changed your email password if it appears to be compromised, or spamming.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  42. An update on my issue, my email is working on my S5 now, I’m using IMAP w/o any security.  Not sure if this is the wise thing to do, but it works.  BTW I am using Blue Mail and it seems to be pretty robust so far.

    Thanks Mike

    1. Hello Chuck,

Thank you for contacting us again. I was able to create a new folder under Inbox by doing the following:

      1. Hit the 3 (horizontal) lines on the top left.
      2. Click Show Folders.
      3. Hit the plus + sign on the top right.
      4. Then, it will ask you where to create the folder, touch where you want the folder created. For example root.
      5. Name the folder and hit the OK button. You will then see it listed.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  43. Thank you John Paul but that doesn’t answer my question. I want to know how to create a folder (or sub-folder) under Inbox. The only two options available when I select MOVE are the Inbox and Trash. I am using Pop3. Thanks.

  44. I am trying to create a folder(s) in my email on my Galaxy 5S. There is a video on YouTube but it doesn’t work on my phone. Is there a way to do this so I can save a message to a specified folder?

    1. Hello Chuck,

Thank you for contacting us. When we tested (IMAP settings) on a samsung phone, it synced the folders automatically.

I was able to move the email by doing the following:

      1. Open the email you want to move
      2. Touch the 3 dots next to the email
      3. Select Move
      4. Click the folder you want to move the email to

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  45. Hi,

I had the same problem with Camille. User name is grayed out so i had to delete and create a new one. Outgoing went smoothly, but im still getting this error for incoming: “Unable to connect to Email server to verify your  account information. No response from server.” Mine is pop3.

    Please help.

  46. @Donna Walls thank you for your post and instructions. I have spent 10 days struggling with it to no avail and your advice of changing “imap” to “mail” finally got it to work. Thanks a million!

  47. Hi, I am having trouble with outgoing mail on an S5.  Incoming works fine, and I noticed that the outgoing folder on the server shows my test emails in the outbox, but they are not going out to the recipient.  I am using IMAP w/o security.

    Thanks

  48. I have gone through all the steps to send and receive emails I have the email page there but cannot receive any emails I have 2 email accounts the other is {removed} and cannot receive emails on either account I am trying to set up skype but am unable without being able to receive an email from them.

    1. Hello Tracy,

Are you getting any specific error messages upon setup? Or did the phone seem to set up fine but you are not seeing any incoming mails? Do you have any other devices connecting to these email accounts? Are they set up as IMAP or POP3?

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  49. Hi John-Paul,

Thanks so much for helping me resolve this issue. I was able to setup email on my phone after your response.

    Best Regards,

    Merva Somer

  50. I found that downloading the OWA for Office 365 Enterprise users to be the easiest solution for Galaxy S5 Users in particular.

  51. Hi,

I am having problems setting up email on my phone (using LG G2).Tried setting up email with both IMAP4 and POP3 with no security but keep getting the error message that it cannot communicate with the server! Typed box952.bluehost.com for IMAP4 server, security off, port number 143, my full username ([email protected]), and password. Typed box952.bluehost.com for SMTP server, security off, port number 25, require sign-in checked, full username ([email protected]) and password. Keep getting the same error; setup incomplete, cannot connect to server. try again after checking network connection and entered info. Can you please help me resolve this issue? Thanks so much for all your help.

    Best Regards,

    Merva Somer

    1. Hello Merva,

Thank you for contacting us. It is possible that the ports you are using are being blocked on your network.

Since you are connecting without SSL (security off, port number 25), try connecting with the secure settings as a test. If your host has cPanel, you can view your email settings at any time.

If your problems persist, I recommend contacting your host to ensure those are the correct connection settings for email. They can also review the logs for connections from your phone, while you are trying to connect.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  52. Hi,

I am having issue setting up my Outlook 365 Enterprise account on my Samsung Galaxy S5. [email protected]. My email is administered through my company. We also utilize Sharepoint, which I tried using the Sharepoint name for the domain, then my email. I tried just using the ixxxxcxxxxxxxsxxxxxxxx.com\[email protected], then the 365 PW. I then used outlook.office365.com for my Server SMTP Address. I cannot find where to change ports within the configuration menu, so I leave it at the default SSL (995 I am assuming). When I try these settings I continuously receive an authentication error. Would my administrator have to allow this device to sync with my Outlook 365 Account? am I missing something?

    1. Hello ScookeIII,

995 is the normal SSL port, and you should not normally have to have anything changed on the server in order to sync, however you may want to check on that. Since the error is an authentication error, that is either a server name, username, or password issue. You will want to ensure those are correct as well.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  53. hi, i’d appreciate it if you would delete my previous message. i thought you were going to delete my email address before you published it.

anyway. i just deleted my account and added it on again and it works fine. 🙂

    thanks

    1. Hello Camille,

I also have a note4 and I think I can help. I cannot speak as to the requirement of your host to have the username as the full email address. That is the case with us here at InMotion, but if your other phone is set up the same way, then that is also likely in your case.

As to your grayed out username and email address. I see that when I manage the account and click on ‘Incoming Settings’. Mine is also grayed out. To correct that information, you will need to remove the account from the phone and then recreate it. As long as you have set it up with IMAP, you will be fine. If you set it up with POP3, however, you will lose any emails that were downloaded to the phone. However, you should be fine there since you are having issues connecting, there should not be any emails for that account on the phone.

To delete the email account, tap the Emails icon on the phone. Then tap the three bars next to the word ‘INBOX’ at the upper left corner. Next, tap the ‘Manage Accounts’ option at the bottom of the screen.

You should see the account you want to work with in a list. Touch and hold the account you want to delete for about 2 seconds. You will now be on a similar list but your chosen account should have a check next to it. Tap on the trashcan icon in the upper right and then confirm the deletion. That will remove the email account from your phone.

Now you can start again and add the account. You will be able to enter the full email address as the user during this process.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    2. Hello Camille,

I’m glad you got it going. I modified your question, and marked out your account name, domain, etc.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  54. Thanks so much in advance for any help. I am having a lot of difficulty getting my email set up in a Galaxy 4 Note I bought today. I know all of my settings, they worked perfectly this morning in my LG-MS770.

I finally got my outgoing mail set up. It works fine. But my incoming won’t authenticate. It turns out that it is set up like this:

    Email address: c******@***************r.net

    Username: c*********

So I am assuming that I need to fix my username and change it to my full email address as is stated above and as it is set up in my old phone. But those two areas are greyed out and I can’t get to them to edit. I can get to all the other fields

Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

  55. I solved this by downloading a different email client. It is called “Nine.” Using this app for email I was able to connect to my exchange account.

So I think the problem may be with the email client that comes with the phone (in my case the Galaxy Note 4).

    1. Hello Todd,

I’m glad to hear you got it working. It might be helpful to look in Samsung’s Support site, as they may have a guide specific to your device.

I attempted to look it up for you, but you must enter your specific carrier, etc.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  56. Good DAy

I Got an S 4 Mini and set up my mail according to steps.

When i press the button DONE a message caome up saying : “Authentication Faild”

    What shall I Do?

    Thanks

    Louwrens Haasbroek

    1. Hello Louwrens,

Thank you for contacting us today. An “Authentication Faild” message typically means your Username or Password is incorrect.

Make sure you are using your full email address as your username, including the ‘@’ symbol.

Your password is secret to you, but if you do not know it, you can reset it in cPanel.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  57. I can’t get my Galaxy Note 4 to connect to my hosted Exchange 2007 account. I have all of the correct settings for Domain\username, password, email address and exchange server. But I keep getting an error message “unable to set up account – authentication failed.”

    1. Hello Todd,

Thank you for contacting us today. An Authentication failed message usually means your username, or password is incorrect.

I recommend double-checking the settings for typos, or misspelled words.

If your problems persist, contact your email host, so they can review the logs for additional problems, or confirm if you are hitting the server before failing.

They may also know a workaround, or fix for the issue.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    2. Great!!!!!!!! easy to understand info I spent sometime looking for something that i could understand before i stumbled onto this site. You provide the best info and its easy to understand excellent website will refer you to all my friends and clients,,, thanks

  58. I just upgraded to a samsung galaxy s5 over the weekend. I cannot set up my email. I keep getting the message. “unable to connect to email server to verify your account information. No response from serve.” How can I get this set up?

    1. Hello Jessica,

Sorry to hear that you’re having problems setting up emails on your Galaxy S5. I didn’t have a Galaxy on hand to test with, but I did have a new Galaxy Note 4. They both use the same type of email client. When you specify the Security type – IF you are using the SSL version, make sure you specify SSL (Accept all Certificate types). Otherwise, it will never authenticate. If you choose NOT to use SSL, then you wouldn’t have this problem either. If you need to see all of the appropriate email settings for your account using SSL or not using SSL, please see How to find my email settings.

I hope this helps to clear the problem up for you! Please let us know if you have any further questions or comments.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  59. Hi – apologies in advance if already covered !

Samsung S4 and Exchange server settings.

my s4 using 1and1 exchange was working perfectly until a day ago. All my contacts, email and calendar synch smoothly. But now have had problems so deleted the accoutn and attempted to set as new, but when i use set up using exhange server on s4 for email setting i get “unable to connect to server ” problem. Can someone kindly help, advice step by step, I contacted 1and1 but they cant seem to find an issue as they there servers are ok

    thanks

    1. Hello neil,

Thank you for contacting us. Usually an “unable to connect” error means the hostname setting is incorrect, or the port may be blocked.

I recommend double checking your email settings with 1&1, or possibly contacting them to ensure there is not a server problem, or lapse in your account billing.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  60. I recently deleted my account from Samsung galexy note 3.   when I tried to add the account again  showing the message that autuntification failed.  Could you polease help me how to sort this isue.

    Regards

    1. Hello Saji,

Thank you for your question. An “Authentication Failed” message means either your password, or username is incorrect.

I recommend confirming your email settings are correct, then trying again.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  61. Thank you to all that have tried to help me with this problem.

Can I ask has ANYONE here managed to configure SquirrelMail to work on their email client on their phone, I have no problem with every other email account I am using. It is purely SquirrelMail that refuses to work. I am aware I can access it via my phone browser but I am looking for this account to integrate with my email client…If not the default Samsung client then I am willing to download and try ANY email client.

    Thanks again

    1. Unfortunately, the webmail clients aren’t quite made for mobile access. Your best solution would be to set up the account on your phone using IMAP as described in this article.

  62. I just figured this out. I was having the same problem as others setting up email on my Galaxy S4. Here’s how to fix the problem.

    1. Look at the IMAP server field where your email address will be generated as imap.email address.com.

    2. CHANGE the word imap to the word mail.

    3. Do the same for the outgoing email field of SMPT (when you get to it).

    4. If needed, look in cPanel to see what ports to use. Mine for IMAP (incoming mail) is 143 and SMPT (outgoing mail) is 25 (you may need to manually change this).

    5. Make sure as stated in the above directions to use your full email address in the email address field as well as the Username field.

    I tested and it works.

    Good Luck!

    1. By adding these additional instructions to it. This is what I did when I couldn’t get my email on my G-S4 the first time around. Unfortunately when a field populates people tend to trust it but in this case some of the information needs to be changed! Here’s what I did to fix the process for my G-S4.

  63. Thanks John Paul, I was aware that I could access SquirrelMail via my browser, that is the way I am currently using it, on a laptop this is fine but I was looking to access it via the email client on my phone as opposed to the web.

    Cheers anyway

    1. Hello Al,

As I mentioned above, you can access your email via the client on your phone, by viewing your email settings and following the setup guide above.

If you set your Samsung phone up as IMAP, it will see the exact same emails you see in Squirrel mail.

Since you are getting the error “Unable to connect to email server to verify account information. No respose from server” most likely your hostname is incorrect, or your phone network is blocking the port. I recommend comparing those settings to the ones in cPanel.

If your problems persist, it may be easier to contact Live Support, so they can assist you with setting up email on your Samsung phone.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  64. I have tried setting it up both via pop and imap with the same results:

“Unable to connect to email server to verify account information. No respose from server”.

Can SquirrelMail actually be used via a mobile at all? As I have read that it is purely a webmail client and is only intended to be accessed through a web browser. If so, is their any other client that can be used to access my SM account.

    Thanks

    1. Hello Al,

Thank you for your question. You will have to access Squirrel Mail in a browser, which you should also be able to do on your phone’s browser.

Since Squirrel mail just connects to your email account via SMTP, you can connect your phone with the same settings.

You can view your email settings in cPanel at any time.

We are happy to help further, but will need to see the specific email settings you are using to troubleshoot further.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  65. Hi

I am trying to set up my Samsung Galaxy SIV to access an email account that I currently have with SquirrelMail, is this possible? As to date I have had no success. I do not hold out much hope as I have yet to see a solution to my problem anywhere online to date.

    Thank you for your time

    Al

    1. Hello Al,

How are you trying to set up the email? Are you getting an error? Our tests above work with an S4, though visually they are a bit different.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  66. Thanks for your reply, Scott. I have tried everything…been on remote admin from ATT and Samsung, went to the Samsung rep at Best Buy, started in safe mode…and it also doesn’t find my basic, one month old Plantronics bluetooth…trying to swap back my old phone now.

  67. I get the same messages with my new Note 4, I have copied the same configuration as my S4 and desktop Outlook.

Is there an issue with activating those ports (993 and 465) on a new phone?

I have tried everything and I am fairly comfortable with settings like this…and I am just copying the same settings that work on my GS4 from yesterday.

    1. Hello Chris Woods,

Have you tested the non-secure ports to see if they work? If so, it may be a port blocking issue with the provider, though why they would block secure ports is beyond me. Still, it is a good test.

You may also want to contact Live Support and have them walk through you the troubleshooting for you.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  68. When I attempt to set my Samsung to use SMTP over TLS I keep getting a message ‘checking outgoing server settings…’ and the a message ‘Setup could not finish server doesn’t support TLS’ I then attempt to use SMTP over SSL and I get a message ‘Unable to safely connect to server…. could not validate certificate signature’

I followed your instructions to the dot (port is 465 for TLS and for SSL, server is the secure server, etc.,)

    1. Hello Jess,

Thank you for your question. I found a guide online on how to setup Email with 1&1, it should help you get started.

Since you are hosted with 1&1, you may want to contact them and verify there aren’t any issues with their services.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    2. Hello keith,

Thank you for contacting us, we are happy to help. What are the error messages you are getting?

      Thanks,
      John-Paul

    3. Hello Menashay,

Thank you for your question. If you are using the Shared SSL settings for email, you may get a validation warning due to it being “Self-Signed.” It is safe to use the shared SSL, and you can also purchase an SSL for your specific domain, if want to avoid this warning.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  69. I can’t login to my work email on my galaxy s5 i says: there are problems with the security certificate of this site. The name of the site does not match the name of the certificate.

then i click OK and if says: incorrect server address entered or server requires a protocol version not supported by emal.

    Can you please help me.

    1. Hello Efrain,

What are the server settings and ports you are using when setting up the email on your Galaxy S5?

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  70. I havea galaxys4 as well and it is having trouble authenticating as well I tried the normal settingsthat I used for my iPhone which is imap.1and1.com and ssl security setting and it won’t do it I’ve tried multiple other settings too

    1. Hello Felicia,

That is correct. Anything that you typed into the phone in order to get the email setup on your phone. We would want to know ALL of the items that you typed into the phone.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  71. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. I tried to setup my email as imap with no security. I keep getting the message that it cannot communicate with the server.

    1. Hello Felicia,

Sorry for the continuing problems. However, we need details on the settings. What you post here does not get published until we approve it, so you’re welcome to type your specifics settings in a reply, then we can look and remove them before approving your comment. If you’re not willing to do that, then you can contact our live support team. They can check your settings while talking with you over the phone, email or through a chat.

Provide us a little more information (the settings you used to setup your phone) and we can investigate the issue further.

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.

  72. I followed all the steps but I got a message stating the server was not responding.  I have been trying for several weeks.

    1. Hello Felicia,

Sorry to hear about the problems you’re having. I checked the email server by creating a test account and sending and receiving an email. Both worked with no problem indicating that the email server is operational. We would need to know what setting you used to setup your phone. Additionally, it would help us if you could tell us what kind of phone you’re trying to setup. Please provide us a little more information and we would happy to help.

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.
