If you are using IMAP to connect to your email account you may only see your inbox folder and no other folders you may have set up in another mail application or webmail. An IMAP folder list can be downloaded to your Outlook 2010 email client so you can subscribe to it.

  1. Open your Outlook 2010 email client
  2. In the left pane, right-click on the top level folder for your IMAP account
  3. Click "IMAP Folders"
  4. outlook_imap_folders_1

  5. Click "Query"
  6. outlook_imap_folders_2

  7. Select a folder and then click "Subscribe". If you want to select multiple folders, press and hold the crtl key as you select multiple folders.
  8. outlook_imap_folders_3

If you do not see all the folders you have created in another mail program or webmail itself, you may need to update the IMAP folder list. The folder list can be updated by following these steps. It may be necessary to repeat these steps multiple times until all your folders appear:

  1. In the left pane, right-click on the top level folder for your IMAP account
  2. Click "Update Folder List"
  3. outlook_imap_folders_4

If you need further assistance please feel free to ask a question on our support center.

I have already indciated that I was trying to set up Imap and not Pop3 that was some time ago when I was saying I had Pop3 set but wanted to get Imap working.

Once again was trying to get Imap working and solved the issue by reloading Office 2007.

I posted this almost a month ago and thanks for the reply. I reloaded Office 2007 and now I can see the advanced tab in more settings and can set the Imap service in and outgoing.

One issue with 2007 is that it does not synce always, it's very slow and I get error messages that it couldnt connect to Imap server but with 2010 or 2013 is works fine. There is also a delay with opening emails and deleting them it takes a few mins and says the email did not complete downloading..WHAT ! Its in my box so what the heck!

It does this on several machines I have Outlook 2007. Other versions of Outlook setup the same way are fine. Go figure.

Any ideas why 2007 acts this way?

We actually do not know why it would act any differently. As far as the server is concerned, it looks for the right connection settings and then is waiting for any instructions from Outlook as for what to do.

I found other settings and reloaded Office 2007 and now when I click more options the advanced tab is seen!! (Hotmail): IMAP

I have outlook 2007 but dont see any address on the left side. I created two hotmail accounts but would like to see my Imap folders. I just get combined emails into one in box even though I have two separately created accounts. Now these are going to a server. Am I missing something?

Hello DX Station,

You can't see multiple folders in a POP3 account. Only the Inbox folder receives email. The IMAP protocol should be used if you wish to have separate folders within your email account.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

I am so incredibly frustrated.  I have tried on Outlook 2010 - when I right click there is NO option for IMAP.  I tried on Outlook 2003 where IMAP should be in the Tools menu.  It is not.  I cannot find IMAP anywhere.  Please, help!

In your email clients are you using IMAP as the incoming mail option? Unless they provided an update that removed the option it should be there if you are not using POP.

I tried this but it didn't work. First I subscribed to Inbox, Sent, Deleted and Drafts, as instructed. Then updated my folder list. But still no delete mail folder. Any other suggestions?

You may be able to set up mail filtering or adjust mailbox behaviors, like in Mozilla Thunderbird. For the Outlook equivalent, I advise checking with Microsoft support.

Hello Aja,

You will need to right click your address listed on the left hand sidebar, click Imap Folders. Click on Query then select the folders you wish to subscribe to then click ok to close the window.

Hi there,

Thanks for this, but I've tried it and when I choose my folder(s) and click subscribe it doesn't do anything.

My email account is through my domain which is hosted by bluehost. Could that be the issue?

Thanks, jane :)

Hello Jane,

Thank you for contacting us. If your email is setup using the IMAP option, it should work successfully.

If it is not working, I recommend reviewing the mail logs for errors, or record of your connection. Your host should be able to help you with this.

Thank you,

Thanks so much for the help, John-Paul.

I'll get in touch with bluehost and see - although this is now the least of my worries as I just learnt my account has been hacked and infected with malware and I'm trying to navigate my way through that (I'm a blogger, not a coder!)

Oh, and I realised after posting my initial comment that this is actually a support site for inmotion hosting company, so I really appreciate your response.

Cheers, jane :)
