Removing a category in PrestaShop 1.6

Now that you know how to add new categories to your PrestaShop 1.6 store, you will need to understand the proper way to remove them. Removing them is not as simple as deleting the category itself. You need to take into account the products that are within the categories themselves. Below is a quick tutorial on how to properly remove a category within your PrestaShop 1.6 store.

How to delete a category in PrestaShop 1.6

  1. Log into your admin dashboard.
  2. Once in the dashboard, click on the Catalog link on the left-hand menu. Next, click on the Categories option from the submenu.
  3. This will bring you to the main Category page. There is only a single category listed,Home. Click anywhere on that row to continue to the list of categories under the Home category.

  4. Now we are at the screen that lists all the categories under Home. Find the category on the list that you want to remove and click on the down arrow next to Edit on that row. Click on the Delete option that appears.

  5. Once clicked, several options appear at the top of the screen regarding the products under the category you are attempting to delete.

I want to associate the products without the other categories with the parent category and then disable them. This takes the categories that are under your selected category and assigns them to the parent catgory, in this case Home. It also disables the products so they are not currently available in the store. If the products are associated with more than one category, they are not assigned to the parent category, but simply remain under the other category to which they are assigned.
I want to associate the products without the other categories with the parent category. This option does the same as the first option, except that the products that are assigned to the parent category will remain available in the store.
I want to remove products linked only within this category and no others. This last option will remove the products that are associated with only the category you are deleting. They are not reassigned anywhere.
  6. Once you have selected your option, click on the Delete button to continue the process. You can now return to the Categories list and see that the category has been removed from the list on the storefront.

  1. Hi everyone thank you for this very clear article. I’m having a problem when I try to delete a category in the back office. The category does not delete. I manage to move it around and change its position but systematically if I try to modify it or delete it, it goes back to the top in position 1. The other weird thing is that the second category just below also bears the number 1 position. Looks like a bug from Prestashop…What do you think about it ? Thanks in advance !

    1. Hello Romain – sorry for the problems with deleting a category in PrestaShop 1.6. I would recommend that you first turn on debugging in PrestaShop and then see if you’re getting an error message. This issue is well discussed in the PrestaShop forums. Go to this page to find out more about the issue: https://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/313379-solved-cant-remove-products-and-categories/. If you continue to have problems, post in their community forums and someone there (or the moderator) will assist you.

  2. Hi!

And how to get rid of a category that has already been deleted from “categories” but won’t disappear from the menu bar? In Preferences >> CMS it’s not there.

No product is assosiated with this category, all sub-categories have also been removed (but despite that, are still visible on page)

I’ve got very few items in my store, this category that I now want to remove has been added by my SEO.

    Help!

  3. Hii !

Is it possible to recover a deleted category ? Because they still are in database so maybe it’s possible to enable it.

    1. After researching it, we found no way to restore a deleted category without doing so from a backup file. Keep in mind, restoring back-ups in e-commerce platforms can be tricky. Especially when dealing with orders and inventory.
