One of the best features of BoldGrid is the Staging option. Staging is a basically a location created to hold a second website within the BoldGrid Administrative interface. Staging allows you to create a new or "staged" site while still have an "Active" or "live" site. This means you can work on building your new BoldGrid site without removing your current WordPress website. It's important to remember that the Staging site is not visible to the public. We will go over the general steps to use Staging to build another website.

Installing the Staging Site

The first step in using the Staging option is to install it. NOTE: The Staging site cannot be installed until after an Active site has already been installed.

  1. Log into your website admin interface.
  2. In the menu at left, click on Inspirations
  3. Inspirations list

You will see the available Inspirations that you can select. Pick an Inspiration that you want to use.

  4. Click on Themes Tab

In the top left-hand corner you will see three choices for Pagesets that can be used with the Inspiration. Select the Pageset that you wish to use.

  5. In the top right-hand corner, click on the Next button.
  6. Hover over a theme for preview or selection

At this point you will see the options to make the Inspiration you have selected as your website (the active site), or you can make it your Staging site. Click on second radial button in order to select the Staging option.

Confirm the theme choice for installation

You will see the Inspiration being installed.

  7. Enable theme for Staging

Once the installation is complete you will see a "Congratulations" screen. You can click on the link to view the Inspiration as it appears on the front end, or you can click on the button labeled Customize. This is the next phase of the BoldGrid site development. You can click on the Customizer Guide for more information.

How to Edit/Customize the Staging Site

  • Using the Customize menu for staging

When you have the Staging Site loaded, you can edit a few different ways. You can edit its Pages, or you can use the Customize option to modify the Staging site as needed.

  • Customize Staging Pages

The pages of a staging site can be edited by simply clicking on Pages in the menu at left, and then editing the pages or adding the pages of the development group labeled Staging.

How to See the Staging Site

View Staging Site

Finally, the last step in seeing the staging site is by clicking the on title bar in the Admin Menu, and then click on Staging site. This will bring up the staging site so that you can view your changes.

I have an active site created.  I want to have a copy of it as the starting point for my staging site so that I can begin adding a Store to it.  How do I start with a copy of the current active site in the Staging site?

Currently BoldGrid does not have a way to copy an existing site to staging, the simplest way to do this would be to clone your site to a sub-directory make your changes and then replace the existing site with it.

If I follow your instructions to switch from active to staging and pick a theme, either the same theme or a different theme, will I lose the graphics and content on my active site?   Will it be replaced with the graphics from the theme?

If you switch to your staging theme, this will not overwrite your current, active site.

When I click on the Inspirations link in the sidebar (Step 2) I don't get the "How would you like to install your new content" dialog. Instead I get a list of BoldGrid themes. Are there different versions of BoldGrid?

Hello Brad,

Apologies for the article giving you different information on BoldGrid. The behavior of the Inspirations menu did at one time do this, but BoldGrid has been upgraded since. The article needs to be updated to reflect the change. When I finish with this comment, I will look into updating it to make sure that we are providing the current information. Apologies for the confusion.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.
