Coupon codes are a great way to encourage customers to purchase products from your WooCommerce shop. If your customer is armed with a coupon code that will give them a better deal, they will be much more likely to buy from you. In this article, we’ll show you how to create coupon codes for your site that is running WooCommerce.
Creating Coupon Codes
Once logged in, hover over WooCommerce, then click on Coupons
On the Coupons page, you’ll see any coupons you have created. To create a new one, click on Add Coupon. It should look something like the screenshot to the right.
Now, you will see several fields to fill out. The top field, is the coupon code that you want to create. You could create something like 5OFF to create a 5% discount, or FREESHIPPING to give customers free shipping.
The next field you will see here, is the description. This is something that will display within the back end of your site, as well as the front end depending on your theme and how it interacts with coupon codes. You’ll want to enter something descriptive in here to ensure that it can easily be identified.
Of course, a coupon code doesn’t do much good without applying a discount. In the next section, we’ll show you how to apply discounts.
Applying discounts with coupon codes
On the coupon code creation page, you will notice a the Coupon Data section. This section is where all of the functionality of the coupon codes will be implemented.
First, select your discount type in the dropdown box. You are able to select percentage and flat rate discounts on either the entire cart, or an individual product. For example, if you want your coupon to apply a $5 discount on all purchases, then you would select Cart Discount.
Next, you will need to set the amount to be discounted in the field labeled Coupon amount. If we were to use the previous example of $5 off of the cart amount, you would enter 5.00 into this field. If you chose to discount based on a percentage, you would enter it numerically. For example, for 5%, you would enter 5 into this field.
Once done creating a coupon code, click the Publish button to save your changes.
Additional discount options
In the previous steps, you learned how to create a coupon code and adjust your discount amounts provided by it. In addition to this, there are even more options that you can add:
Within WooCommerce, you also have the ability to simply offer free shipping with the use of a coupon code. To grant free shipping with the use of a coupon code, check the box that says Allow free shipping.
Within each coupon code, you have the ability to select if a coupon will be applied before or after tax is calculated. To apply the discount before any taxes, select the box labeled Apply before tax.
If you are running a promotion for a set period of time, you will probably want that coupon to expire on a certain date so that the coupon cannot be used indefinitely. To set an expiration date for a coupon, enter the date of expiration into the field labeled Coupon expiry date.
