What is the WP-DB-Backup plugin for WordPress
The WP-DB-Backup plugin will allow you to fully back up your WordPress database to ensure that you have a copy of your WordPress database at all times. It is also quite helpful if you are moving your site from one location to another.
First, you will need to log into your WordPress dashboard.
Next, click on Plugins on the left menu bar in the dashboard, then click on Add New. On this page, you will see a search box which will allow you to search for various plugins. Searching for “WP-DB-Backup” should present you with the plugin that you are looking for within the first result.
Now that you have located the WP-DB-Backup plugin, just click on Install Now. WordPress will then handle the download and installation of WP-DB-Backup for you. Once complete, click on Activate Plugin to enable it.
Backing up your WordPress database with WP-DB-Backup
WP-DB-Backup makes backing up your WordPress database very easy. In fact, it is only just a few clicks to back up the full database.
To access the backup functions, first click on Tools, then Backup.
Once within the backup functions, you will see a list of tables to back up. On the left side, all of your core WordPress tables are listed. On the right, is any optional tables available such as those associated with plugins. Select them all if you want to do a full backup.
Down to the bottom of the page, there are several options to select a location of the backup on the server, to download the database backup to your computer, of to email the backup to you. I highly recommend downloading the backup to your computer or email as this will allow you to have a copy stored off of the server for in the event that something were to happen such as a hack that could cause your files to be modified.
Once you have the options selected that you want to use, click “Backup Now!”. WP-DB-Backup will then begin with the backup process. When running, you should now see a progress bar. Once complete, it will send an email, provide you with a download, or simply store the database backup to your account depending on the options you chose previously.
Scheduling backups with WP-DB-Backup
WP-DB-Backup also provides solutions to schedule backups. You may schedule backups hourly, daily, or weekly. I recommend keeping them weekly instead of daily unless you make changes to your site on a daily basis. I also recommend never selecting the hourly function unless you are on a dedicated server as it will certainly increase your server loads.
To schedule backups, you would go the the same backup screen you were on previously, but scroll down a bit under the other backup options that you used before. Here, just select a schedule increment, and enter your email address to send the backup to. After entering the correct options, click on “Schedule backup”. WP-DB-Backup will then automatically generate database backups for you.
How often should I use WP-DB-Backup to back up my database?
We recommend that you back up your website before and after a change is made to it. This way, if anything unforeseen happens, you always have a backup to restore from. Personally, I keep several backups from previous versions of my site to be sure that I always have a few options available to me to restore from.
