Adding downloadable (or digital) products to your PrestaShop 1.5 store can be a big boom to your business. Digital products are anything that can simply be downloaded after purchase. They can be ebooks, images, music files, audio books, etc. These require no shipping and the customer can access them instantly. Follow the instructions below to learn how to add a downloadable product to your PrestaShop 1.5 store.

Creating digital products in PrestaShop 1.5

  1. Log into your PrestaShop 1.5 admin dashboard.
  2. Using the top menu bar, hover over the Catalog tab and click on the Products option.
  3. This leads you to the Products screen. To create your new digital product, click on the green Add New button in the upper right corner.
  4. When you first enter the Product Edit screen, you will need to take notice of the set of radio buttons at the top. You will want to select the radio button for Virtual Product (screenshot below). This will add a Virtual Products tab on the left hand side and immediately take you there.

Hello Scannon2, it appears that you may have followed up with this question here: Virtual Product Downloads (question), but I'm not sure as it's not quite clear in the response. Were these two questions separate or the same thing? And did you find an answer to your problem? Please let us know.

Why do I have to specify a quantity for downloadable products? I am trying to sell a service, and I can offer that service an unlimited number of times. I can't figure out how to put "infinity" in the system... :)

To set an unlimited number of downloads for a user, as stated to the right of the field within your Prestashop admin, simply set the number of downloads to 0 which will set it to unlimited.

:)

I discovered the "trick" to it is to disable all stock management options. THEN (and only then) could I forgo a quantity in inventory.

And unfortunately, I tried using "0" at first, since that's a pretty common setting in PrestShop. Didn't work, it just stopped letting them add the item to the cart.

Thanks!

Anybody know how can I upload 1000 ebooks file?

I usually use upload of products with EXCEL, in Prestashop. So, It's easy to configure 1000 products. But in Excel I don't know how configure the upload of "virtual products".

Hello Vik,

Thanks for the question. I think you're asking to upload your description of your products in Excel, correct? If this is the case, the best way to import those into Excel is to make standard text based format of the entries for the product and then use the import options in Excel to create your spreadsheet that would be used to import into PrestaShop. You may also want to consider looking at an add-on for PrestaShop to manage virtual products. Unfortunately, these are not free, but they may provide a solution for you. Here's an example of one: Digitalique - Virtual Products Management.

I hope that helps to clear up your question. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Is it possible to sell digital downloads hosted on AmazonS3 in a way that the URL can't simply be shared? thanks

Hello Dorian,

This process is for products hosted on the same server as the PrestaShop cart. It does not appear that external URLs are allowed in this process, so AmazonS3 would not be allowed.

Kindest Regards,
Scott M
