Dear clients, This year marks 25 years since our first server came online. We started in 2001 with two people and a few rented offices in California. What follows is the story of how a two-person operation became a hosting company trusted by more than 170,000 businesses, told through the moments that mattered. 2001 to 2010: A Few Desks and a Phone That Always Got Answered We opened in California in 2001 and immediately got to work. In 2004, we had our first office in Virginia Beach. Then, by 2010, we became one of the first web hosts to go green, moving into a larger, more efficient Los Angeles data center, creating our in-house network operations team, onboarding 100 team members, and launching Web Hosting Hub, our first specialized brand for easy website builds on shared hosting. Even with two people, the idea was simple: a customer should be able to reach a real person who can resolve their hosting issues. That is the first promise we ever made, and it still defines how support works here. Trained staff, available around the clock. The team was small, but the phone got answered, and that set the tone for everything after. 2011 to 2015: Building the Platform By 2011, more clients were depending on us every month, and we had a choice to make. We could either rent more space on someone else’s public cloud or invest in our own servers and network. We chose to own the platform, and answer to ourselves. While this meant additional upfront costs, it also allowed our team to be responsive to our clients: upgrading, fixing, and troubleshooting in real time. We continued to follow that principle. We moved into a larger office in 2011 and had over 200 team members by 2012. By 2013, we launched Advanced Hosting Support, now InMotion Solutions, alongside our managed hosting line. Clients with complex setups could now reach senior engineers for help. In 2014, we put SSDs behind shared and VPS hosting and brought our DDoS Threat Defense System online in our West Coast Data Center. Then, in 2015, we shipped the BoldGrid website builder and extended that DDoS protection to the East Coast Data Center. During this time, we were fully committed to owning our infrastructure to better serve our clients. We design, build, and run our own servers and our own network. With boots on the ground at our data centers and 24/7 support, we delivered faster fixes for customer issues. Moving to SSDs and building our own DDoS defense were early proof of that. That kind of control is the part clients rarely see, and the part we care about most. 2016 to 2019: Giving Clients Room to Grow A site that succeeds is bound to outgrow its plan, so we built our clients a ladder to keep climbing. In 2016, we launched high-availability VPS and opened our Colorado office, matching the growth we saw in our clients and what they needed. In 2017, we began offering dedicated servers in our East Coast Data Center, added an unmanaged VPS line, and upgraded our network to 1Gbps. Then, in 2019, we purchased a 61,000 square-foot building as our Virginia Beach headquarters to accommodate our own growth. That same year, we also launched the WebPro Dashboard at WordCamp US. By the end of 2019, the full ladder was built. You could start on a shared hosting plan, grow into Managed VPS Hosting, and move up to a dedicated server. The blog that became a store and the freelancer who became an agency could keep climbing without ever starting over. InMotion Hosting teases WebPro for WordCamp US 2019. WebPro was built to be a single dashboard for agencies and web professionals to manage multiple sites at once. It was our solution to help these folks handle client billing, account upgrades, and email setups from a centralized place. Today, we use it to help our agency partners in our growing Agency Partner Program. 2021: Choosing to Stay Independent In our twentieth year, we reflected and asked: Who do we answer to? The answer was, and is, you, our clients. PCMag named InMotion Hosting an Editors’ Choice for the best web hosting of 2021, a top pick decided by hands-on testing of our product performance. That honor is the result of our efforts and choices to reinvest in our products for the benefit of our clients. That is exactly what being an employee-owned company has allowed us to do. The clearest test of our independence came when we acquired RamNode through our own technology arm, intending to build upon what its founder created. We chose to invest in RamNode’s growth. For RamNode customers, the product and people they relied on stayed put as an independent entity that we intended to invest in growing. Answering to outside investors rarely gives companies the freedom to make those calls. “We built InMotion Hosting from the ground up and we truly understand the pain points of this industry. Our focus is not to tear down a business and flip for a quick profit. Instead we want to build on the foundation started by these entrepreneurs and synergistically work with their core values and offerings to take the business to the next level.” – Sunil Saxena, Vice President of InMotion Hosting & Board Member InMotion Hosting Brands 2022 to 2024: Faster, More Global, and Recognized for It During the early 2020s, two things became clear of nearly every customer we served: their sites needed to be faster and their audiences were no longer all in one country. We spent these years answering both. Speed came first. In 2022, we rolled out NVMe SSD storage across our VPS plans, the quickest drives we could put under a customer site. Pages rendered faster, databases answered faster, and stores that live or die by checkout speed benefited right away. Then it was time to expand our services. In 2023, we opened a purpose-built data center in Amsterdam, our first outside of the United States. The location was deliberate, sitting near three of the world’s largest internet exchanges. This afforded our clients faster load times for European visitors and GDPR compliance. The growth ladder we spent two decades building had officially made it to Europe. In 2024, we gave clients more control of their environments. We launched more control panel options for VPS and dedicated clients, so they could choose what was best for their needs. That same year, we partnered with Monarx to harden server security against malware. And our efforts were getting noticed: SourceForge named InMotion Hosting a Winter 2024 Leader on a 4.2 out of 5 score that placed our product in the top 5% of reviewed products. All the while, we stayed the course we set back in 2001: reinvesting in infrastructure we own and staffing it with people who stay, now proven well beyond where we started. In fact, through the years, we’d maintained our Great Place to Work® Certification™. The people who learned your setup years ago are still the ones answering your call. 2025 to 2026: Still Building, 25 Years Later As we enter our 25th anniversary, we continue to focus on our mission to bring tools, platforms, and outstanding customer service within anyone’s reach to transform their online presence. In 2025, we moved into our Constitution office in Virginia Beach and committed to a remote-first team. Then, in late 2025, we formed InMotion Labs, a specialized research team whose job is to look even further ahead than most companies do. Our team keeps its finger on the pulse, watching where the industry is heading, the tools agencies are starting to reach for, and the risks no one is naming yet. Right now, they are focused on a practical question: as agencies adopt AI to build sites and apps from plain description, how do we help them bring those tools to their own clients, then deploy, maintain, and secure them? InMotion Labs researches, tinkers, and develops in the name of creating practical tools for agencies to modernize how they and their clients host their web sites and applications. All of it backed by 25 years of home-grown infrastructure and human support. Recently, we turned to the clients who had grown the most with us: the freelancers and small shops who once ran a single site on our plans, now becoming agencies managing dozens of client sites. In 2026, we made that relationship official with the Agency Partner Program. The program treats an agency as a long-term partner, rather than a one-time referral. From a single WebPro dashboard, partners manage billing, upgrades, email, and application installs across every client account. They earn commissions on hosting accounts they bring over, get discounted pricing for themselves (and their clients), and move to the front of the line for our most experienced engineers for Advanced Product Support. We migrate their site for free and list them in a public directory where new clients can find them. For an agency, the program turns hosting from a cost they pass along into an active part of their business growth. We’re still investing in raw performance, too. In 2026, we also tripled the base port speed on our dedicated servers. We gave the highest-traffic clients more room before they ran into a limit. Four Things That Never Changed. 1. We own the machines your site runs on. Our hardware and network are run by our own people. 2. A real person answers. Trained support engineers available around the clock, no scripts. 3. Room to grow without starting over. Shared to VPS to a Dedicated Server, on one ladder. 4. Still employee-owned. Founder-led and proudly independent since 2001. The 170,000 Reasons This Letter Exists More than 170,000 businesses run on InMotion Hosting today, and a team of hundreds stands behind them across two and a half decades. Every milestone above happened for one reason: clients stayed and trusted us with more. That is not something we take lightly. Thank you for 25 years. We are still here, still independent, and still glad to hear from you any time. So, contact us, we’re happy to help!
