Web hosting providers now offer add-ons to customize your hosting plan. One of our top add-ons is a dedicated IP address.
What is a dedicated IP address? Can’t I just use the IP address which comes with my server?
These are great questions. Today, we’ll share the answers along with other helpful information.
What is a dedicated IP address?
A dedicated IP is a unique internet protocol (IP) address which is specific to only your website. No other websites or accounts use your dedicated IP address.
What is the IP address that comes with my hosting?
On most shared hosting plans, the IP address which comes with your account is a shared IP address, which is shared across all other websites using the same hosting resources. This means that hundreds of websites are using the same IP address for their website. If you have a smaller website, this is a perfect setup and it shouldn’t give you any troubles.
Why would I want a dedicated IP address?
A dedicated IP address gives you the ability to access your website at any time using the IP address. This is especially helpful if the DNS for your domain is not pointed over as you can still view and work on your website without having to wait for propagation time. This also gives the ability to edit, view, and upload files using your dedicated IP address.
Also, if something happened to a website on a shared IP address, it could affect all of the websites on that shared IP address.
Say a customer on a shared IP address sends spam emails to a large group of people. Gmail catches the spam and deems it’s a threat, so they blacklist the sending IP address. This also happens to be the IP address that your website and email is on. When sending an email to your friend who has a Gmail address, you get a bounceback due to the other customer’s actions. This is a prime example of how one person’s decisions can affect everyone.
A dedicated IP address is specific to your domain, and would prevent the above scenario from happening.
Additional benefits of a dedicated IP address
Dedicated IP addresses can help with overall website speed. When someone visits your website and your website is using a shared IP address, the server parses the request and finds the correct website to load. When someone visits your website and your website is using a dedicated IP address, the server does not have to spend time finding the right website since the dedicated IP is specific to your website, allowing for a faster load time.
A dedicated IP address is a unique internet protocol address and has many benefits for your website. Today, we looked over what a dedicated IP address was in contrast to a shared IP address, and looked at the benefits of purchasing a dedicated IP address.
Since it brings the ability to access your website when DNS is not propagated, adds additional security, and enhances speed, a dedicated IP address can be a wise decision.
If a dedicated IP address meets your needs, you can purchase by logging in to your Account Management Panel (AMP), clicking the “Marketplace” tab, and selecting the “Dedicated IP” button.
