Can I change a subdomain into an add-on domain?

Hi, I have been working on transferring a website from bluehost and successfully migrated the Wordpress site as a subdomain of my main domain bramblesartretreat.com. Unfortunately I've made a mistake in that I should have created it as an addon domain. I know that addon domains also have entries under subdomain listings. eg. my addon domain *******.com also has subdomain entry *******.******.com. I need the new addon domain for ***********.com but as I've already migrated the Wordpress files to a subdomain ****.*******.com, I am not sure what to do to rectify the problem and not make it any worse. I would like to have the addon domain as ********.com and the associated subdomain *******.********.com with the document root of just /********.com.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for contacting us about moving a WordPress site from a subdomain to an Addon domain. First, if you changed the WordPress domain name to a subdomain in WordPress, you should start by changing it back. If you didn't change it in WordPress you can skip this.

  1. Go to Administration -> Settings -> General in the WordPress Dashboard.
  2. Next, look for the WordPress address (URI): and change it from (example.com/WordPress to example.com)
  3. Lastly, look for the Site Address address (URL): and change it from the subdomain to the addon domain name.

Then, add the domain as an Addon and move the files to the new document root of the addon domain, be sure to include all hidden files as well. You should then be able to login to the Addon domain WordPress Dashboard.

Finally, you may have to reset permalinks so the URLs will resolve correctly. If you have any issues, our WordPress Troubleshooting guide can help narrow it down, or you can reach out to our Live Support team for assistance.

Thank you,

John-Paul

Thanks for your advice— problem solved!
