Question about beefing up security of the website

Our website was just hacked and we were told that it will take 24-48 hours to do a system restore to the time before we were hacked. Does anyone have any advice as to what measures could be done to avoid being hacked in the future?

Hello Avi Nadel,

Thanks for your question concerning adding security measures for your site. The easiest thing you can do immediately is to determine how best to create a backup of your own.  Depending on the type of website you have setup, then you may have to get an outside service or add a plugin.  This way, you can provide a backup of your own for restoration much quicker.

Additional security measures depends on your site.  We have a variety of Security related articles in our Support Center that may also help.  If your site is not already using an SSL certificate, then you should look into that - it's important if you want to keep connections to your site secure - especially for credit card transactions.  Additionally, there are many plugins and services who not only provide another layer of security, but also services to help you restore you site to normal after an attack.   We need a little more information from you about your site in order to give you more specifics.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

Kindest Regards,

Arnel C.

While there are some standard measures you can take on any site, a little more detail would be helpful.  Is it a Wordpress site? Something else?  The security companies will tell you that the number one thing they see are weak and shared passwords.  Next would be things not being kept up to date -- I manage hundreds of Wordpress sites and it is essential for us to keep Wordpress itself, as well as plugins we use up to date as once vulnerabilities are found, exploits appear quickly.
