Domain transferred, email not working

Domain was transferred and now email is not working. Wanted to keep the email working through inMotion even though the website is somewhere else. I see CNAME records for mail but I believe they need to change to A records. Is that correct? If so what is the IP for that?

The easiest way to leave a website hosted at InMotion and point your mail to external hosting is to do the following in your Zone Editor

  1. Normally your MX record will point to your site's URL (which we're going to pretend is yoursitenamehere.com ). You should change your MX record to point yoursitenamehere.com to mail.yoursitenamehere.com . Do not add another MX record, just change the existing one!
  2. Now, find the DNS record for mail.yoursitenamehere.com . If it is still set as a default, it will probably be a CNAME. Change it from a CNAME to an A Record.
  3. Point that A Record to the IP address of your external mail server.

That should be enough! Setting this up for the first time can be a bit tricky though, so feel free to reach out to our 24/7 Technical Support team if you would like us to set it up for you.

Actually was looking at this from the other direction. Website and Domain is being supported by a hosting company external to inMotion. I want their DNS record to point back to inMotion. The A record for mail needs to have and IP address for that. Today the record they have is a CNAME.
