I have several domain names that are registered with another Hosting Company, but there is no content behind those names. How do I create content here and point those domain names to the hosted Wordpress platforms I am building here?

Arnel,

Thank you kindly for responce.  YEs that is the truth that i did not specify that the nameserver editing was disabled by Godady.  I have just assumed that you would know as a competitor.  My fault and I apologize.  I did get Godady to change the nameserver foe NS1 and NS2 to be Inmotion's names.  Afterword, I got the support from your company to create my environment once they have enterred the URL number for your nameservice.  I can start the development now.

Thanks Ceda!  It's great that you can now proceed with the development!  Let us know if you have any further questions or comments.

Stay safe and well!

Arnel, As I have already stated I cannot change the nameserver - is protected and not available for editing.  Only URL is changed.  Which means that Godaddy still own/manages the domain name but they are not hosting it, you are.  so what now.  The instructions you have given me do not work.

Apologies Ceda, but you did not state that the nameservers were not able to be changed.  If you stated it in a different question, or comment, then therein lies the confusion.

If you are unable to change the nameservers to point to a different host server, then you can't use those domain names with content created at a different host.  It's not possible.   If that were the case then anyone could override content from any site.

You would need to create content at that host.  Or use different domain names. GoDaddy -as a domain registrar- does not own a domain. Domains are registered by someone and they have the rights to change it and point it to where they wish to use it.  If you are the rightful owner of the domain, then you should be able to transfer it or point it as per the rules that govern all domain registrars under ICANN.

Websites are based on the hosting company (which holds all your files) and the domain that is used for the URL. The DNS (Domain Name System) for a domain determines where the content will be coming from. And that can only be done from the registrar or the entity controlling the DNS for that domain name.  The DNS for a domain is also the only place where you can point a domain to a different location if you are not changing the nameservers.  I hope this is clear.  If I am misunderstanding the situation, then you're welcome to provide an explanation of the situation in more detail.

Hello Ceda,

Thanks for you question about creating content pointing the domain names to this location.  Your answer is really a two parter:

1. Changing the domain name servers

Even if you register a domain with another domain registrar, it's possible to use that domain on your host after pointing the domain name to your hosting service.  For example, the name servers  might be ns1.someregistration.com and ns2.someregistraton.com.  You would need to use your domain registrar's interface to change the name servers to InMotion's name servers.

2. Installing WordPress

You can install WordPress at InMotion using Softculous, then develop the site here.  You would use the domain names that you pointed to InMotion for the WordPress installation.  You can then install a maintenance mode plugin to prevent outside access to the site.  Then when you're done you can simply turn off maintenance mode, and the site is published with the correct domain name!

If you've already started building content at a different location, I recommend using a plugin like Total Upkeep.  Add this plugin to the site where you're creating your WordPress site content. Then when you're done, simply use the export and import feature to migrate the site from one place to another.  Total UpKeep allows you to change the domain when restoring.  When you're migrating, you would create a new WordPress install at the location where you want to host the WordPress site, then add the plugin.  You can then restore the backup created at the older location.

If you're just wanting to move content from a Post or Page, I recommend that you do it this way:

  1. Create your content using the WordPress editor on an existing WordPress site.
  2. Once you're finished, change the view to the Code view.
  3. Copy the code.  Remember that the title does not get included in the overall post code. It's just easiest to re-type the title.
  4. Paste the code into the site  that you're using to present to people on the internet. Re-type your title if needed.
  5. Exit from Code view.  You should be in the visual editor.  If you had any media, click on the media that's in your new post and then replace the file with one that you upload.
  6. Change the media file's link to the "media file".
  7. Save or Publish your post or page.

This is basically how I create content before publishing it for our own Support Center.  It allows me to create the content without being in the production environment.  I using WordPress version 5.4.1.

I hope this helps!  If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

Kindest Regards,

Arnel C.
