How can I build a new WordPress website for a client who needs their current site in the meantime?

My client has a website hosted by someone else. They want me to build a new WordPress site for them, which I'll host on InMotion. But they want to keep their current site live (including the domain name) until the new site is ready.

What's the best process for doing this? I know I need the domain name before I can start building the new site here on IM.

I'm not a techie, so please explain in non-techie language, please :)

Hello Sharon,

Thank you for your question regarding building a new WordPress site using a domain with an existing site. To do this while keeping the previous site online, you will need to perform what is called a "Hosts File Modification". This technique involves modifying the hosts file on your computer, which is a file that tells your computer where to go when entering a domain name into your browser. By modifying this file you can essentially trick your computer into viewing the site in a different location while still leaving the original site accessible to the rest of the public internet. I recommend reviewing the following guide for instructions on making this change:

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/modifying-your-hosts-file/

Once that is done, all you need to do is install WordPress to the domain as you would normally and you should be all set to start building your site. If you require direct assistance with this task I recommend contacting our 24/7 Technical Support team by emailing [email protected], calling 888.321.HOST(4678), or by starting a a session via your Account Management Panel.

Best Regards,
