There are a few ways that an email can get hacked. The three most important things to watch out for are:
1) Make sure you are using a secure password. I would recommend changing your email password to something completely randomized. Be sure to never use the same password for multiple email accounts. Many emails are hacked when a large data breach occurs and hackers try using the same password for other, similar emails.
2) Confirm that the device or devices you are accessing the email on are not hacked/infected. If the computer or phone you are using has been hacked, changing the password will not help as a new password would get picked up by the same malware. Use your device security software, like Windows Defender, and confirm your devices are secure.
3) You also need to confirm that your router / wireless connections are secured. Using compromised wifi connections in public places can be a problem, so be sure you are connecting on secure channels.
