Show Us Your Pi

March 14th was Pi Day, and here at IMH we celebrated by having a “Show Us Your Pi” contest!

Not That Pie, this Pi

Contestants had to set up their Pi science fair style and show the functionality of their Pi for judging.

Second place went to Nick W. who showed us how he can use his Pi as a security camera. Here is his description on how his Pi works:

“Whenever you are away from the house, all you have to do is login to see what’s going on. In a later project, I am going to refine the motion sensor script so that it will record a 10 second clip and email me a link to the video. In addition to being a security camera, it also constantly syncs any wireless Fitbit tracker that is in range with the Fitbit server. It can also run a speed test from command line. I am always able to connect remotely because of another script that connects with No-ip.com and updates my IP multiple times a day so I can use a hostname instead of an IP. I usually have the pi plugged into a IP controlled power outlet so I can power cycle the pi if it ever becomes unresponsive. However, for the demonstration, I will have that IP controlled outlet plugged into a lamp to prove what you are seeing is in fact video feed.”

Kyle M. took home 1st place.  Kyle’s Pi was ” a refrigerated water cooled overclocked raspberry PI that was running projects for BOINC https://boinc.berkeley.edu/ running projects like https://boinc.fzk.de/poem/ https://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ and https://www.enigmaathome.net/.”
