IMH Collaborates With Girl Scouts

InMotion Hosting is proud to announce our recent collaboration with the Girl Scouts. We worked to create two new badge opportunities in different technical areas to help encourage an interest in STEM paths for young girls. The Girl Scouts organization consists of more than 1.7 million girls who participate in programs to help build courage, confidence, and character as well as aim to make the world a better place.

The events were conducted virtually but we still managed to incorporate hands-on activities to get experience with these technical areas.

Earlier this month, we had Girl Scout Cadettes, who are in grades 6 through 8, meet with members of our design team to earn a web design badge in an event we titled “Coding Something Meme-ingful”. Learning basics in computer coding and creating a meme that impacts other people was the goal. In order to write a computer program, the Cadettes practiced writing shareable code and learned about functions and arguments. They learned how memes are created through code, wrote their own pseudocode, and shared their memes with the group.

We also had Girl Scout Seniors, in grades 9 through 10, earn a cyber security badge in our “Solving A Cybercrime” event by investigating and responding to a fictional cyber crime. The goal was to understand more about insider threats and other security vulnerabilities for companies and organizations. With help from members in our Marketing, Systems Operations, and Network and Security teams, they looked for clues about a fictional hack. During the process, they learned how traceroutes worked and practiced role-playing how an organization should handle the crisis.

Our team members really enjoyed spending time with the girls and getting to share their love of technology. We hope to hold these events again soon to help encourage a love of technology in young girls.

A special thanks to our team members and Jacqueline at Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast for making the event possible. We also thank our participants for engaging with our presenters and waking up ready to learn on a Saturday morning.
