WP Unable to write to directory - incorrect permissions

When uploading photos via Wordpress I'm getting an error that it is unable to create the upload directory. Sounds like a WP permissions issue in my account. Even after switching the WP install directory to 777 it doesn't work. How can I get the WP permissions checked that it has write access to my directory?
