Very slow website since beginning of the year

Hi all!

I don't know if you have this problem but since two or three week, my website starts getting really really slow. I test it with Pingdom and GTmetrix and have the same result. Between 8 and 30 sec load time for the first byte. It's not a cache issue I optimized that website so much it should be running like a lightning bolt.

I think it's more a server problem but I'm not on the west coast and my server is not mark down for maintenance. Now I would really like to know what to do, should I wait, should I change host, I really start to get frustrated because I'm losing money, visitors and trafic. It's also painful to wait 8 sec for every page.

My website speed got slow

My website is on the shared business plan.

A few months ago the site's loading speed ranged between 3-5 seconds. This was before I even implemented most of the suggestions from GTmetrix and the other page speed analysis tools.

Now it's taking around 7 - 12 seconds to load even after doing performance optimizations.

I've been testing with various tools over the last couple of months, including GTmetrix, Pingdom, PageSpeed Insights and Webpagetest.org.

I implemented most of the suggestions from the tools and now most of the grades are B and above; apart from First Time Byte and Server Response Time which have got worse.

On GTmetrix, the PageSpeed Score is 93% while the YSlow Score is 80% but the site still takes 8.5s to load.

On Pingdom, the performance grade is 88 with a load time of 7.15 seconds.

On Webpagetest.org, all performance metrics get As and a B apart from First Time Byte which gets an F. The First Byte time is around 8.9 seconds and the load time is 10.6 seconds.

On Google's PageSpeed Insights, the server responds in about 3.9 seconds.

I'm left confused because when I started implementing these performance optimizations the site was relatively fast. But now after improving the performance scores, the site has become even slower. I think this might have also impacted the bounce rate and time on site because these have also got bad.

Is there something I'm missing? I feel that I've done most of the things under my control. I've removed several plugins that are known to slow down WordPress sites, added a CDN, compressed images, added caching, and more.

Been seeking help on some other forums and most people suggest I look for a faster server. They say the server takes too long to respond and so my website will remain slow even after all those performance optimizations. What's your opinion on this? I'm not well-versed with servers and website speed performance. Please help.

Website Speed Slow Today

I just saw my website is very very slow today, The server seems to be the cause, Could you check why?

Website Speed Slow at Times
We just installed the W3 Cache Plugin on WP after speaking to one of your consultants, and made all the relevant settings including setting up Header Expires times for HTML/CSS/etc. We certainly did see an improvement in results on GTMetrix.
However, yesterday we got a high amount of traffic on a couple of posts, where the number of simultaneous users on the website could be about 1500+ at a time. Visitors told us through our Facebook page that the links are not opening up and some said it is really slow.
Our question is, why is our VPS2000s not able to handle 18-20k unique users a day? (around 45k unique page views as per Google analytics)
This is really frustrating that even after promising an enhanced experience and a 6GB RAM, users are still getting a terrible experience and we could lose loyal visitors.

Hello ProfHypno,

Thanks for the question about your website's speed.  If we take you site through a third party performance evaluation you can see some suggested issues.  I tested with gtmetrix.com and these are your results:  gtmetrix.com/reports/ourmindsareamazing.com/z2YR5VtQ.

One prominent issue that they identify are your images.  Using optimized images would help to reduce load time. Please review the report for further suggestions.  If you are unfamiliar with optimizing your site or code, then you may need to speak with an experienced website developer/designer.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

Kindest Regards,

Arnel C.

Hello Norbertj,

Apologies for the problems with the decrease in site performance that you have been witnessing. I highly recommend that you submit a support ticket to our live technical support team. They have access to your account in order to assess the issues that may be causing the performance decrease - if you are an InMotion Hosting customer. Also, please make sure to perform a traceroute diagnostic and include the results of the test in your ticket. This will help to determine if the issue is related to your network routing to the hosting server. Please submit this information in your ticket and our live tech support team can give you more information in regards to why the site is performing the way it is.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

Kindest regards,

Arnel C.

Hello clheureux, Thank you for your question about optimizing your site. This depends on the kind of site. It is certainly possible that your site could be affected by a shared hosting environment, but if the elements on the site are optimized sufficiently, a shared hosting environment should not cause serious latency. If you are using a CMS like WordPress remember that WordPress dynamically builds the site each time it loads. Even if you have caching programs installed, there may still be Javascript code that executes while the page is loading. In GTMetrix, they will suggest deferring Javascript parsing wherever possible. GTMetrix also will often recommend enabling gzip compression; this can be accomplished by adding the following into your .htaccess file: # Compress HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Text, XML and fonts AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/javascript AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/vnd.ms-fontobject AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-opentype AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-otf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-truetype AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-ttf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/opentype AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/otf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/ttf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE image/svg+xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE image/x-icon AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/javascript AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/xml # Remove browser bugs (only needed for really old browsers) BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html Header append Vary User-Agent These are some starting points, but it can be a long process analyzing the site for optimization opportunities. You will of course want to limit any resources that could cause the server to work harder to generate the pages. For example, compressing large images would be a plus. Best, Christopher M.
Hello Krymeleroy, Sorry that your website speed appeared slow the other day. I just ran a check with a third party website that measures website speed, and your site was graded well. It loads immediately for me. There are many issues that could have caused your site to load slow, but at present it is loading very quickly. If you require more inspection of your site, you can submit a ticket to have the website inspected. Make sure to include more specific information about when the issue happened and steps to duplicate any existing behavior. I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance. Regards, Arnel C.

Thank you for your question about website speed. In my tests the site seemed to load quickly at this time.

You can monitor your server load via SSH. I recommend reviewing the server logs around the reported slow times.

Also, if the website is loading slow when a lot of simultaneous users are on the website, you may want to consider using varnish caching. This allows you to serve cached pages from the RAM, instead of the hard disk. If you need help setting this up, you can submit a ticket request to Live support. They will quote any pricing if necessary before proceeding .

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

Thank you,
