Hi,
I would like to redirect domain.com to domain.net , http redirection works fine, experiencing problem https redirection.
https://www.domain.com redirecting with error message
www.domain.com uses an invalid security certificate
The certificate valid only for following names..
www.domain.net , domain.net
(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

Please suggest me how to resolve this.

Thanks
ItsR

Hello ItsR,

Sorry for the problem with the re-direct. This is not immediately apparent, but it has to do with the nature of an SSL certificate. When you purchase the certificate, it is specifically for a particular domain name. If you are re-directing from a domain_name.net to a domain_name.com, then there will need to be a SEPARATE SSL certificate that covers the domain_name.com domain. The error is telling you that the certificate you're trying to apply is only valid for the ".net" domain that you purchased it for.

The other problem that you may have (since we're not sure what kind of account you have), is that shared server accounts (business level accounts) have a 1 SSL per account limit. Therefore, if you're trying to apply the redirect rule and both domains are on the same shared account, then it won't work if you're trying to keep BOTH URLs using HTTPS. The only resolution at this point would be to purchase a second shared server account and then apply the certificate there, or to upgrade to a reseller/VPS/dedicated. These account types allow you to have multiple IP addresses and therefore multiple SSL certificates applied to the account. When you finally have an SSL certificate applied to both domains, you can apply the re-direct rule with no problems.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Arnel C.

Hello Annel,

Both domains have valid certificates. we are not hosted on third party servers, Both domain servers have separate IP Address. here the issue we are experiencing is when browser access https://www.domain.com before redirect and during ssl handshake browser comparing domain.com with domain.net ssl certificate. Please guide me how to handle this or send me link, i will go through it.

Thanks.

When accessing both over HTTPS, you will need to have SSL certificates for both domains. It certainly sounds as if you only have a single SSL certificate installed for domain.net which is causing the issue. You would need to obtain an SSL certificate for domain.com even to handle the initial redirect if you access it over HTTPS.
