Using Main Sidebar on 2011 Theme

I have tried and tried to get widgets to load on the main sidebar. I've got the content selected to "load on left" (theme appearance) to allow the space for the widgets on the right, but I cant get anything to stick. You'll notice my social share buttons are on the bottom cause they would only stick under footer area 1.
Can I get some help getting that sidebar to work?
