Received High Usage Email Last Night. Need help with error messages.

I'm a little surprised that I've got such high usage numbers. I seldom have more than 40 - 60 visitors on any given day. I did notice on one of the reports that my site received over 17,000 hits from Ecuador. Not sure how that's even possible, but what do I know?

Anyway, I am trying to lessen the load on my end. Yesterday, I optimized all of my photos and I'm trying to implement W3 Total Cache, but I got a couple of error messages:

1. W3 Total Cache Error: Files and directories could not be automatically created to complete the installation. Please execute commands manually.
or use FTP form to allow W3 Total Cache make it automatically.

2. FTP Credentials don't allow to write to file /,htaccess.

I have not been able to use FileZilla yet. It seems to load my site, but, all that I get is a file folder and a /. I have no idea what to do next. I submitted a request for help on that as well as one for missing index files, with nothing resolved so far.

Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Hello winjama, Thank you for contacting us about error messages in W3Total Cache. Often, if you are getting a lot of random hits from locations where you don't have a lot of customers, you would benefit from blocking unwanted traffic, or bots. I found many posts via online search with this error, I first recommend checking the permissions on your .htaccess file. (They should typically be 644). In some examples, deactivating security plugins such as iThemes Security helped. So, you have to troubleshoot your plugins to see if they are interfering. If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below. Thank you, John-Paul
