Unable to install PHP modules via Pear

Attempted to installed Net_SMTP via "PHP Pear Packages", but when I hit the install button, I get an error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '(', expecting '}' in /usr/local/lib/php/PEAR/Installer.php on line 811

It would seem that PEAR package installation is broken...

Typically loading PEAR (PHP Extensions and Applications Repository) is straightforward, however, there may occasionally be problems like this.
