Deleting .htaccess file causes 403 error

Hello,

The public_html folder of one of my sub-accounts, www.my_account.com, is password-protected by an htaccess file that references a DBM-file for usernames & passwords. This is a custom htaccess file placed directly in the folder to be protected (public_html), not generated by Cpanel, and has been in use and working properly since the creation of this account months ago.

This evening, I discovered the htaccess folder at the root of my account - the one where CPanel stores htaccess files when you set up password protection through CPanel. Looking in it by FTP, even after enabling display of dot-files, it was empty. So I deleted it. Immediately, all access to my account via http was cut off. Rather than asking for username & password when I try to surf to www.my_account.com, I simply get a 403-forbidden error.

I have re-created the htaccess folder at the root of www.my_account.com, and set its permissions to 755, but with no change.

Was there something hidden in that folder that InMotion’s confiuration of htaccess requires? What needs to be done to make this work again? I am at a loss, since nothing that I can see has changed – my same htaccess files and same htpasswd files are right there where they always have been, and if there was something important in that htaccess folder, I can’t know what it was since it was presented as empty to me. Help will be greatley appreciated.

While I cannot provide you with exact information as to what is located in your account due to this being a public forum, I did attempt to replicate the issue with the inability to reproduce the error that you are seeing. It is possible that there could be another .htaccess file in there that is blocking access to specific files which is overridden by the one that you renamed. For a resolution of this issue, I recommend submitting a ticket to technical support outlining the specific file within the specific account that is changed as well as where you see the error. Be sure to also provide either the last 4 digits of the credit card on file or the current AMP password so that they may make any changes to your account or provide you with account specific information.
