{"id":979,"date":"2011-09-06T14:38:40","date_gmt":"2011-09-06T14:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/2011\/09\/06\/modfying-mx-records\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T12:40:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T16:40:42","slug":"modfying-mx-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/modfying-mx-records\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Modify MX Records Using cPanel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do MX Records Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><abbr title=\"Mail Exchanger\">MX Records<\/abbr><\/strong> (Mail Exchanger Records) are a type of DNS record that determine which mail server is responsible for handling the email for a specific domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <strong>MX record<\/strong> is configured to point to a <a title=\"Click here to navigate to Wikipedia for more inforamtion on a canonical name record.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CNAME_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">canonical<\/a> (or CNAME) record, such as <em>example.com<\/em> or <em>mail.example.com<\/em>. The CNAME record&#8217;s hostname is configured in another record known as an <abbr title=\"Address Record\">A Record<\/abbr> (Address Record), which points to the specified IP address. That IP address is the server that will be handling the email for your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to configure multiple <strong>MX Records<\/strong> for a domain. These are set into a chronological order, where the <i>lowest number<\/i> <b>receives priority<\/b>. When delivering email for a domain configured with multiple MX records, the server with the highest priority (<i>lowest value<\/i>) will be used first to attempt delivery. If that server does not respond, further attempts are made to the next MX record (by priority), and so on. Companies that service large email server farms, such as Google, will have several servers to handle massive amounts of incoming emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I View My Current MX Records?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-info\"><b>NOTE:<\/b> The <strong>MX Records<\/strong> along with all the other DNS records for a domain are located in the zone file, that is stored in the nameservers. It is important to know <a title=\"Click here to navigate to the whatsmydns.net website and use the DNS lookup tool to find your nameservers.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsmydns.net\/#NS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which nameservers your domain is pointed to<\/a>, in order to view the actual records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dt>Domain is pointed to InMotion nameservers <b><u>AND<\/u><\/b> has been added to cPanel<\/dt>\n<dd>If you want to review your current MX records, you may view them by using the <a href=\"\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/advanced-dns-editor-cpanel\/#dns-view\">Zone Editor in the cPanel<\/a>.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-success\"><b>NOTICE:<\/b> <strong>MX Records<\/strong> were previously managed through the cPanel <strong>Email<\/strong> subheader <em>MX Entry<\/em> section, but this option was moved to the DNS Zone editor within the updated version of cPanel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dt>Domain is pointed to a third party nameserver<\/dt>\n<dd>If you want to review your current MX records, you may review them by using a <a title=\"Click here to navigate to whatsmydns.net to use their MX record checker tool.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsmydns.net\/#MX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">third party lookup tool<\/a>.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like a visual representation of how your domain is routing website and email traffic, you can use our <a title=\"Click here to navigate to our Visual Domain Routing Tool.\" href=\"\/support\/tools\/visual-domain-routing\/\">Visual Domain Routing Tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also view your records using the <i>dig<\/i> command via an SSH session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hosting Your Email with InMotion Hosting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-info\"><b>Note:<\/b> This guide was written as though the <i>example.com<\/i> domain is pointed to <a href=\"\/support\/domain-names\/dns-nameserver-changes\/what-is-a-name-server#imh-name-servers\">InMotion Hosting&#8217;s name servers<\/a> <b><u>AND<\/u><\/b> is <a title=\"Click here to navigate to our guide and learn how to add a domain to cPanel.\" href=\"\/support\/domain-names\/add-another-domain-name-account\/\">added to cPanel<\/a>. If your domain does not meet these prerequisites then you should consider reviewing our guide on <a title=\"Click here to navigate to our guide and learn how to configure your MX records from third party DNS nameservers.\" href=\"\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/third-party-mx\/\">Changing MX Records to Point to InMotion Servers from Third Party DNS Nameservers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your domain is pointed to the InMotion nameservers and you have added it to your cPanel account, by default, your domain should be routing email through your server with InMotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting your <strong>MX Records<\/strong> to work with your InMotion hosting server is very simple. Use the example below as a template for your settings. Simply replace the <em>example.com<\/em> domain with your actual domain name. Note that you will only need a single MX record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table article_table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Priority<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Mail Server<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">0<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">mail.example.com<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"obtain-third-party\" name=\"obtain\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Third Party MX Records<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You are free to use a <a title=\"Click here to navigate to our guide and learn how to configure DNS records to use InMotion Hosting to host your domain's website, while using a 3rd party to host your domain's email.\" href=\"\/support\/domain-names\/dns-nameserver-changes\/change-dns-records-to-use-3rd-party-services#website-with-inmotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different mail server but still host your website with InMotion Hosting<\/a>. This can be accomplished through changing your MX records. Making changes to your MX records will still allow you to host your website with us, but your email at a third party server such as Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in routing your mail to a third party is the obtain the MX records that party wants you to use. In this example, we&#8217;ll use Google. Google would provide you with a list of MX records to enter in. This must be entered correctly for the email to function properly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-info\"><b>Note:<\/b> In order for you to use Google Workspace MX records with Google, you will need to have an established Google Workspace account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table article_table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Priority<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Mail Server<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">1<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">5<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">5<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">10<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ALT3.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">10<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ALT4.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The MX records above are an example of the MX records you would need to use to set up Google Workspace.
