The Mastodon social media platform is steadily gaining more popularity as Twitter and Facebook users tire of timelines manipulated for political purposes. For those who are part of the federating social network, there are plugins that allow you to automatically share new WordPress posts as toots<\/em> (same as Twitter\u2019s tweets<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Share on Mastodon<\/strong><\/a> WordPress plugin works without issue and is covered below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Mastodon Autopost plugin seems to be one of the most popular Mastodon server WordPress integrations, we couldn\u2019t get it working with WordPress 5.8.2.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automatically Post to Mastodon Social Media Account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Install and enable the \u201cShare on Mastodon\u201d WordPress plugin.<\/li>
  2. In the WordPress dashboard under \u201cSettings,\u201d select \u201cShare on Mastodon.\u201d<\/li>
  3. Type in your Mastodon instance URL.

  4. Check the \u201cPost\u201d checkbox.<\/li>
  5. Save changes.<\/li>
  6. Near the bottom select \u201cAuthorize Access.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>
  7. Log into Mastodon, then select \u201cAuthorize\u201d to allow WordPress to upload media files and posts as Mastodon toots.

  8. Create or edit a WordPress post.<\/li>
  9. On the bottom of the post sidebar, you\u2019ll see a \u201cShare on Mastodon\u201d section, with the feature enabled (checked) by default.\n

    Publish or update the post.<\/li>
  10. The Mastodon section will now display a direct link to the toot.\n

    If you delete the linked toot at any point, you\u2019ll need to unlink the old URL in WordPress to retoot the post.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Though there aren\u2019t additional features in the dashboard for the Mastodon integration (as of version 0.6.4), the plugin developer offers code snippets to further customize automated toots. To make adjustments, log into SSH<\/a> (or cPanel Terminal) and navigate to your WordPress root directory. Now edit the plugin PHP file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
