The first cut already happened. Below is who approved the change, the exact schedule, the reasoning behind the number 47, and what it means for sites hosted with InMotion Hosting.

Publicly trusted certificates now cap out at 200 days of validity, down from 398. That limit took effect March 15, 2026. It is the first of three scheduled reductions ending with a 47-day maximum on March 15, 2029. Every certificate authority in the major browser root programs is bound by it, which covers every certificate securing a public website.

Who Decided to Shorten Certificate Lifetimes?

The CA/Browser Forum, the standards body where certificate authorities and browser vendors set the rules for public trust. The measure is Ballot SC-081v3, proposed by Clint Wilson of Apple and endorsed by Sectigo, Google Chrome, and Mozilla. Voting closed April 11, 2025.

The margin was not close. Among certificate issuers, 25 voted yes and zero voted no, with five abstentions from Entrust, IdenTrust, Japan Registry Services, SECOM Trust Systems, and TWCA. All four voting browser vendors, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, voted yes.

There was dissent during discussion. HARICA argued the reduction should stretch across five years and that browsers should share the burden through warning indicators rather than leaving it to CA rules alone. TWCA called the drop from 100 days to 47 too aggressive. Neither position changed the result.

What Is the Full Certificate Lifetime Schedule?

Certificates issued on or after

Maximum validity

Domain validation reuse

Through March 14, 2026

398 days

398 days

March 15, 2026

200 days

200 days

March 15, 2027

100 days

100 days

March 15, 2029

47 days

10 days

Two numbers matter in each row. Validity is how long the certificate functions. Domain validation reuse is how long a CA may rely on an earlier proof that you control the domain before requiring you to prove it again.

The ballot also sets recommended values one day below each hard cap: 199, 99, and 46. Most CAs issue at the lower figure to avoid edge cases. DigiCert moved to 199-day certificates on February 24, 2026, ahead of the deadline.

A related change landed the same day in March 2026. Reuse of organization identity data for OV and EV certificates fell from 825 days to 398 days. DV certificates are unaffected, since they contain no organization data.

Why Was 47 Days Chosen Instead of 45 or 60?

The figure is calendar arithmetic. Each cap is built from whole months, a fraction of a 30-day month, and one day of slack:

Cap

Equation

What each term represents

200 days

184 + 15 + 1

Six maximal months + half a 30-day month + 1 day slack

100 days

92 + 7 + 1

Three maximal months + roughly a quarter month + 1 day slack

47 days

31 + 15 + 1

One maximal month + half a 30-day month + 1 day slack

Apple’s original proposal was 45 days. The number moved to 47 to leave headroom for CAs and integrations that issue at exactly 45 days without technically breaching the cap.

There is an operational reason behind the shape of it. Automated clients typically renew at roughly two thirds of remaining life, which puts a 47-day certificate on a renewal around day 30. That produces a monthly cadence with about 17 days of buffer if a renewal fails.

Why Are Browsers Replacing Revocation With Expiration?

Because revocation does not hold up at internet scale, and the ballot says so plainly. Certificate status services such as CRL and OCSP struggle with request volume, deliver inconsistent reliability, and impose a real page load cost when a browser waits on status queries that stall or time out.

Browsers also soft-fail. When a status check returns nothing, most browsers load the page anyway rather than blocking it. Expiration is the one control that works every time, because clients enforce it locally with no network round trip.

The ballot lists three further benefits:

Certificate contents drift from reality over time. Domains change hands, private keys leak, and control passes to third parties. Shorter lifetimes narrow the window in which a stale certificate stays trusted.

Misissuance gets contained. When a CA issues something it should not have, a shorter maximum limits how long that certificate circulates before it lapses on its own.

Cryptographic transitions get faster. If a weakness surfaces in an algorithm or library, short lifetimes let the ecosystem rotate out of it in weeks instead of waiting out a year of long-lived certificates.

What Happens to Domain Validation Reuse?

This part gets less attention and causes more disruption. Domain control validation reuse drops to 10 days in 2029, which is shorter than the 47-day certificate itself. Proving domain control stops being a step attached to renewal and becomes a continuous background process.

Email-based validation and manually placed HTTP verification files do not survive at that frequency. ACME using HTTP-01 or DNS-01 challenges becomes the workable path.

Do Your Current Certificates Expire Early?

No. The rules govern issuance, not validation. A certificate issued before any cutoff date stays trusted through its original expiration date. Nothing breaks on March 15 of any year. The new cap applies to the next certificate you receive, not the one already installed.

What Does This Mean for InMotion Hosting Customers?

If your site uses the free SSL provisioned through cPanel AutoSSL, the work is already automated. AutoSSL requests and installs replacement certificates on its own schedule without a support ticket. Shorter lifetimes mean it runs more often, which is the intended outcome of the change.

Review your setup if any of the following apply:

You installed a third-party certificate manually through cPanel or WHM and renew it by hand each year.

You manage certificates outside a control panel on a VPS or dedicated server, especially with a script or cron job written around annual renewal.

Your monitoring alerts at a 30-day expiry threshold. At 100 days that buffer consumes nearly a third of the certificate’s life, and at 47 days it fires almost immediately after issuance.

You run certificates on endpoints outside your web control panel, such as load balancers, mail servers, or API hosts.

How Should Teams Prepare Before March 2027?

Build the inventory first. Most missed renewals involve a certificate nobody knew existed, not one that was tracked and forgotten.

From there, move manual renewals onto ACME through AutoSSL, certbot, or acme.sh, and retire any email-based domain validation still in the workflow. Wildcard and multi-domain certificates need DNS-01 automation with API access to your DNS provider, which takes longer to set up than most teams expect. Adjust alert thresholds to match the new lifetimes rather than carrying over annual-cycle defaults.

Teams running certificates across multiple client sites should treat this as an infrastructure project with a deadline, not a renewal task. The 100-day cap arrives March 15, 2027.

If you are unsure how your certificates are currently issued or renewed, our support team can confirm your configuration. Contact us or open a ticket from your account area. Customers on Managed Hosting plans can request a certificate audit as part of ongoing management.

The maximum lifespan of a publicly trusted SSL/TLS certificate is dropping from 398 days to 47 days across a fixed set of dates.
