Creating URL redirects for dead links is one the easiest methods for improving Joomla search engine optimization (SEO) in larger websites. This Joomla 4 SEO method is easy with the pre-installed Redirects module. There\u2019s no need to install a third party redirect plugin, though there are plenty available for other SEO tasks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below we\u2019ll cover how to enable the plugin and create redirects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redirects for Joomla 4 SEO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Log into your Joomla 4 administrator dashboard (e.g. https:\/\/example.com\/administrator).<\/li>
  2. Select System<\/strong> from the sidebar.<\/li>
  3. Under Setup<\/em>, select Global Configuration<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>
  4. Ensure Search Engine Friendly URLs<\/strong> and Use URL Rewriting<\/strong> are enabled. Then, Save & Close<\/strong>. Also, rename your htaccess (or web.config) as advised.\u00a0<\/li>
  5. Select System<\/strong> on the left again. Under Manage<\/em>, select Redirects<\/strong>.<\/li>
  6. At the top, you\u2019ll see a warning: \u201cThe Redirect System Plugin is disabled.\u201d Select the plugin link.\u00a0<\/li>
  7. In the upper-right corner of the pop-up window, select the Status<\/em> drop-down menu and select Enabled<\/strong>.

  8. Select Save & Close<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>
  9. All redirects are 301 (moved permanently) by default. For more possibilities, select Options<\/strong> from the upper-right corner and enable Activate Advanced Mode<\/em>. This adds a Redirect Status Code<\/em> option when creating redirects. Then, Save & Close<\/strong>.<\/li>
  10. Select New<\/strong> at the top or Add new link <\/strong>to add a single redirect with a comment. To add multiple redirects at once, select Bulk Import<\/strong>. Remember to save changes.

  11. Finally, test your redirects in a private browsing session to ensure they work properly.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You can check for broken links with other Joomla SEO plugins. There are also free online tools that can do this such as BrokenLinkCheck.com<\/a>. You should audit your website for dead links at least annually as links to external sites will likely have changed since your last search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
