This can make your site appear more professional, by masking the fact you\u2019re using our name servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up vanity name servers on shared hosting would be much different than running your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/domain-names\/dns-nameserver-changes\/using-custom-name-servers\/\">custom name servers<\/a> on either a VPS or dedicated server. As these run completely separate from our public name servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With vanity name servers you are just hiding or masking the hostname of our public name servers, but the IP addresses and the physical servers handling your website\u2019s DNS requests would still be our public name servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"#why-use-vanity\">Why Use Vanity Name Servers?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#setup-vanity\">Setting up Vanity Name Servers on Shared Hosting<\/a><ul><li><a href=\"#create-dns\">Create DNS Records<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#point-domain\">Point Your Domain<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#wait\">Wait for Propagation<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-use-vanity\">Why Use Vanity Name Servers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do a Whois lookup on your domain, or if you use our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/tools\/visual-domain-routing\/\">domain routing tool<\/a>, anyone can see the name servers that your domain name points to. For instance if your domain was <strong>example.com<\/strong> here is what you\u2019d see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before vanity name servers:<\/strong><br>NS1.INMOTIONHOSTING.COM<br>NS2.INMOTIONHOSTING.COM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After vanity name servers:<\/strong><br>NS1.EXAMPLE.COM<br>NS2.EXAMPLE.COM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using vanity name servers allows you to hide the fact that your website actually relies on our public name servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"setup-vanity\">Setting up Vanity Name Servers on Shared Hosting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To setup vanity nameservers, you need to create two <strong>A (address)<\/strong> DNS records pointed at our public name server IP addresses. Typically you\u2019ll point one for <strong>ns1<\/strong> and one for <strong>ns2<\/strong>, followed by your domain of choice, but the DNS records you create can be anything of your choosing, so long as you also register those hosts with your domain Registrar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"create-dns\">Create DNS Records<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The steps below go over setting up vanity name servers on the <strong>example.com<\/strong> domain. Be sure to use your actual domain when you follow these steps yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/how-to-log-into-cpanel\/\">Login to your cPanel<\/a>.<\/li><li>Under the <em>Domains<\/em> section, click on <strong>Simple DNS Zone Editor<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select your domain name from the <strong>Domain<\/strong> drop-down.<\/li><li>Under the <em>Add an A Record<\/em> section, fill in these values:<br><strong>Name:<\/strong> ns1<br><strong>Address:<\/strong> 74.124.210.242<br>When clicking off of the <strong>Name<\/strong> field, it will convert to the format <em>ns1.example.com<\/em>.<\/li><li>Now click on <strong>Add a Record<\/strong>, you should see a success message of:<br><em>Added Record ns1.example.com. &gt; 74.124.210.242<\/em><\/li><li>While still in the Simple DNS Zone Editor, under the <em>Add an A Record<\/em> section, fill in these values:<br><strong>Name:<\/strong> ns2<br><strong>Address:<\/strong> 70.39.150.2<br>When clicking off of the <strong>Name<\/strong> field, it will convert to the format <em>ns2.example.com<\/em>.<\/li><li>Now click on <strong>Add a Record<\/strong>, you should see a success message of:<br><em>Added Record ns2.example.com. &gt; 70.39.150.2<\/em><\/li><li>After that, down under the User-Defined Records section you should now see:<br>ns1.example.com. A 74.124.210.242<br>ns2.example.com. A 70.39.150.2<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"point-domain\">Point Your Domain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you registered your domain name through InMotion Hosting you can use our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/domain-names\/dns-nameserver-changes\/change-domain-nameservers-amp\/\">changing your domain nameservers in AMP<\/a>, to switch your domain from using our public name servers to your new vanity name servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise you\u2019ll need to let your domain Registrar know about the name server change, and you can follow our guides for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/domain-names\/changing-your-domains-nameservers\/#registered-elsewhere\">updating nameservers for domains registered elsewhere<\/a> if this is the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to let them know that you\u2019re trying to run name servers from your domain name. This typically involves going to a section in their control panel labeled something along the lines of <strong>maintain name servers under this domain<\/strong>, it can also be referred to as <strong>domain hosts<\/strong>, or <strong>glue<\/strong> records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wait\">Wait for Propagation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve registered your new vanity name servers with your domain Registrar, it can take 24-48 hours before they become fully active.
