In this article I\u2019ll show you how you can manage your Exim mail queue on your VPS (Virtual Private Server) or dedicated server in WHM (Web Host Manager). Here you can check for any messages that might be held up for delivery for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n

Exim is the mail software that runs on your server to control email delivery, there are mail queue management options you can use with Exim directly via the command line. However below we\u2019ll cover how you can use the Mail Queue Manager<\/strong> in WHM to simplify the process of tracking down deliveries.<\/p>\n

In order to follow along with the steps below you\u2019ll need to have root access<\/a> to either your VPS or dedicated server.<\/p>\n

Using the Mail Queue Manager in WHM<\/h2>\n

For this example, let\u2019s say we\u2019ve emailed user@example.com<\/strong>, but they are saying they haven\u2019t received our message yet.<\/p>\n

  1. Log into root WHM<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. \"click<\/a>\n
    <\/div>\n

    In the top left Find<\/strong> box, type in exim<\/strong>, then click on Mail Queue Manager<\/strong><\/p><\/li>\n

    In the Search\u2026<\/strong> box type in user@example.com<\/strong><\/p>\n

    From the Select Query<\/strong> drop-down, select Search Recipients<\/strong><\/p>\n

    For the Search Type<\/strong>, you can leave Begins With<\/strong> selected<\/p>\n

    Specify the Start Date<\/strong> and End Date<\/strong> to search between. You can manually type these in, or click on the calendar icon that displays a 17<\/p>\n

    Also specify the Start Time<\/strong> and End Time<\/strong> to search between<\/p>\n

    Finally click on Run Report<\/strong><\/p><\/li>\n

    In this case we can see that our messages to user@example.com<\/strong> are Frozen<\/strong>. This means that Exim has detected an error trying to deliver the message, and it is going to hold the message and try again later.<\/p>\n

    You can click on the magnifying glass icon to view the message in a new window.<\/p><\/li>\n

    Reviewing the message we can see that it\u2019s not delivering to user@example.com<\/strong> because their mail server is giving us back the error of Mailbox quota exceeded<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>\n

  6. At the top of the message you\u2019re viewing you can choose to Delete Message<\/strong> which will completly remove it from the mail queue. Or you can choose to Deliver Message Now<\/strong> which will attempt to send the message again, in this case if the user has freed up some space on their email account it should go through successfully now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
