The free <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.owncloud.com\/apps\/files_antivirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anti-Virus<\/a><\/strong> app integrates ownCloud with ClamAV, a popular Linux antivirus application, on the same server or an external system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"#install\">Install the ownCloud Antivirus App<\/a><ul><li><a href=\"#clamav\">Prepare ClamAV<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"#configure\">Configure ownCloud Anti-Virus<\/a><ul><li><a href=\"#same\">ClamAV on the Same Server \u2013 Daemon (Socket) or Executable<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#remote\">ClamAV on a Remote Server \u2013 Daemon or Daemon (ICAP)<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"install\">Install the ownCloud Antivirus App<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following steps cover how to install the ownCloud app from within the dashboard as an administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li>Log into ownCloud and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/software\/owncloud\/install-owncloud-apps\/#install\">install the <strong>Anti-Virus<\/strong> app<\/a>.<\/li><li>From the settings page, under <strong>Admin<\/strong>, select <strong>Security<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Scroll down to the <em>Antivirus Configuration<\/em> section to make necessary changes. Read the following sections for configuration information.<br><p class=\"alert alert-danger\">If the app is misconfigured, it will reject all uploads.<\/p><\/li><li>We recommend changing the drop-down option for <em>When infected files are found during a background scan<\/em> to <strong>Delete file<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Save<\/strong> at the bottom.<\/li><li>Attempt to upload a file to test your setup. If there is an issue, a notification at the top of the page will state \u201c[signature] is detected in the file. Upload cannot be completed.\u201d<br><br>We recommend using the EICAR Standard Antivirus Test File for reassurance. It is a <em>benign<\/em> text string specifically created to trigger a false positive response (falsely states a virus is present) for testing purposes. <strong>It is not malicious.<\/strong> To do this, visit https:\/\/www.eicar.org\/?page_id=3950 and read the entire page.\u00a0<\/li><li>After you\u2019ve read everything, add the alphanumeric text string from the EICAR page to a new text (.txt) file.<\/li><li>Attempt to upload the text file to ownCloud. A pop-up at the top of the page should state \u201cVirus Eicar-Signature is detected in the file. Upload cannot be completed.\u201d If so, you now know your AV solution works. If not, recheck your configuration using the information below.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can select <strong>Advanced<\/strong> to create rules for scanner results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"clamav\">Prepare ClamAV<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated in the beginning, you\u2019ll need the ClamAV malware scanner installed on the server or an external system and able to receive scan requests from ownCloud. ClamAV can be installed on Linux (CentOS, Ubuntu, Gentoo, etc.), Windows, macOS, and BSD. There\u2019s also a ClamAV plugin for cPanel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should ensure the server running ClamAV has the resources available to handle scan requests before continuing. If you have doubts about this, or your hosting account has exceeded resource limits recently, you should implement website speed optimization methods first including a content delivery network (CDN) and firewall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"configure\">Configure ownCloud Anti-Virus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ownCloud Antivirus lists three scanning modes: Daemon (Socket), Executable, and Daemon. The best option for you depends on whether your ClamAV installation resides on the same server as ownCloud or a separate server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"626\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/owncloud-antivirus-1.png\" alt=\"ownCloud Antivirus with ClamAV\" class=\"wp-image-74282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/owncloud-antivirus-1.png 626w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/owncloud-antivirus-1-300x170.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"same\">ClamAV on the Same Server \u2013 Daemon (Socket) or Executable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daemon (socket)<\/strong> is the recommended method for using ClamAV on the same server. It is less resource-intensive compared to the executable mode. The <em>Socket<\/em> path should match the file path to <code>clamd<\/code>. One way to find this information is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/server\/ssh\/how-to-login-ssh\/\">SSH into your server<\/a> and run the netstat terminal command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">netstat -a | grep clamd<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The file path is at the end:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<code>unix  2      [ ACC ]     STREAM     LISTENING     1754490  \/var\/clamd<\/code>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-info\">You must have ran <code>freshclam<\/code> (for updates) at some point for ClamAV to generate the socket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Executable<\/strong> for the same server uses <code>clamscan<\/code>, is slower, and demands more resources compared to the daemon (socket) mode. But it does allow you to combine additional commands to the security scan. This option allows you to quarantine files and easily develop scripts to notify key personnel for further action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this option, your <em>Path to clamscan<\/em> must match the clamscan file path. There are a few ways to find this via SSH:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">locate clamscan<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">find \/ -name clamscan<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The default file path for clamscan on a cPanel-managed server with the ClamAV plugin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\/usr\/local\/cpanel\/3rdparty\/bin\/clamscan<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The default file path for clamscan on a Linux cloud server:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\/usr\/bin\/clamscan<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>If the Path to clamscan in ownCloud is wrong, you must change it in the ownCloud config\/config.php file using SSH, cPanel, or another method. The line to change will state <code>'files_antivirus.av_path' =&gt; '\/usr\/bin\/clamscan'<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"remote\">ClamAV on a Remote Server \u2013 Daemon or Daemon (ICAP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daemon<\/strong> sends ownCloud scan requests to ClamAV on a remote server. You\u2019ll need the <em>Host<\/em> (server hostname or IPv4 address) of that server and the Port number ClamAV is configured to listen on. The clamd.conf file on the remote server must also be configured for external requests as this isn\u2019t enabled by default.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li>Find your ClamAV configuration file in the terminal: <pre>locate clamd.conf<\/pre><\/li><li>Edit the file with Nano, Vim, or another text editor as user root.<\/li><li>Remove the \u201c#\u201d before <code>TCPSocket 3310<\/code> to enable listening for requests.<\/li><li>Change the port number to an unused port if desired or another application is already using port 3310.<\/li><li>Exit and save changes.<\/li><li>Permanently open the port in your firewall \u2013 Advanced Policy Firewall (APF), ConfigServer Security &amp; Firewall (CSF), Firewalld, etc.<\/li><li>Restart Apache web server. CentOS: <pre>service httpd restart<\/pre> Debian: <pre>systemctl restart apache2<\/pre><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daemon (ICAP)<\/strong> allows you to integrate other AV scanners including Kaspersky and McAfee using the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP).
