This was reported by <em>Cedric Van Bockhaven<\/em> and fixed by <em>Gary Pendergast<\/em>, <em>Mike Adams<\/em>, and <em>Andrew Nacin<\/em> of the WordPress security team. Three other security issues were also fixed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In WordPress 4.1 and higher, files with invalid or unsafe names could be uploaded. Discovered by <em>Michael Kapfer<\/em> and <em>Sebastian Kraemer<\/em> of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsasec.de\/\"> HSASec<\/a>.<\/li><li>In WordPress 3.9 and higher, a very limited cross-site scripting vulnerability could be used as part of a social engineering attack. Discovered by <em>Jakub Zoczek<\/em>.<\/li><li>Some plugins were vulnerable to an SQL injection vulnerability. Discovered by <em>Ben Bidner<\/em> of the WordPress security team.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WordPress-42\">WordPress 4.2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Version Release: WordPress 4.2<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WordPress 4.2<\/a> \u2013 nicknamed \u201cPowell\u201d \u2013 was available for download on April 23, 2015. The version is named after<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bud_Powell\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Bud Powell<\/a>, a legendary American jazz pianist. Here is a list of the major feature revisions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Improved <\/em><strong><em>Press This<\/em><\/strong><em> from the Tools Menu <\/em>\u2013 This allows you to add the function to your browser bookmark bar or mobile device home screen so that you can quickly and easily share content such as video, images, or website pages.<\/li><li><em>Extended Character Support<\/em> \u2013 Version 4.2 now supports native Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters, as well as musical and mathematical symbols and hieroglyphs. They have also added<a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/codex.wordpress.org\/Emoji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> emojis<\/a>!<\/li><li><em>Switch themes in the Customizer<\/em> \u2013 You can now directly switch and preview themes from the Customizer.<\/li><li><em>Support for more embeds<\/em> \u2013 Links from Tumblr and Kickstarter can now be embedded within the editor.<\/li><li><em>Streamlined Plugin Updates<\/em> \u2013 Updates for plugins have been streamlined and simplified.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There were also additions to WordPress 4.2 under the hood. These included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>utf8mb4 support<\/em> \u2013 Database character encoding changed from utf8 to utf8mb4, which adds support for a whole range of new 4-byte characters.<\/li><li><em>JavaScript accessibility<\/em> \u2013 You can now send audible notifications to screen readers in JavaScript with <em>wp.a11y.speak()<\/em>. Pass it a string, and an update will be sent to a dedicated ARIA live notifications area.<\/li><li><em>Shared term splitting<\/em> \u2013 Terms shared across multiple taxonomies will be split when one of them is updated. <\/li><li><em>Complex query ordering<\/em> \u2013 <em>WP_Query, WP_Comment_Query<\/em>, and <em>WP_User_Query <\/em>now support complex ordering with named meta query clauses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Security WordPress Update 4.2.1 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why was this update released?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WordPress team was made aware of a cross-site scripting vulnerability, which could enable commenters to compromise a site. The vulnerability was discovered by <em>Jouko Pynn\u00f6nen<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WordPress 4.2.1 has begun to roll out as an automatic background update, for sites that support those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read more from the<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/news\/2015\/04\/wordpress-4-2-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> official WordPress site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Security WordPress Update 4.2.2 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why was this update released?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This security release addresses two major issues. WordPress states the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cThe Genericons icon font package, which is used in a number of popular themes and plugins, contained an HTML file vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack. All affected themes and plugins hosted on WordPress.org (including the Twenty Fifteen default theme) have been updated by the WordPress security team to address this issue by removing this nonessential file. To help protect other Genericons usage, WordPress 4.2.2 proactively scans the wp-content directory for this HTML file and removes it. Reported by <em>Robert Abela<\/em> of Netsparker.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cWordPress versions 4.2 and earlier are affected by a critical cross-site scripting vulnerability, which could enable anonymous users to compromise a site. WordPress 4.2.2 includes a comprehensive fix for this issue. Reported separately by<em> Rice Adu and Tong Shi<\/em>.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe release also includes hardening for a potential cross-site scripting vulnerability when using the visual editor. The security release also includes a fix for an issue where it was possible for a user with \u201cSubscriber\u201d permissions to create a draft using Quick Draft. This new release also has roughly 20 fixes for bugs previously reported. Information on the<a href=\"https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/log\/branches\/4.2?rev=33382&amp;stop_rev=32430\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> bugs<\/a> and their fixes can be seen here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Security WordPress Update 4.2.4 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why was this update released?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This security update corrects six issues, including three cross-site scripting vulnerabilities and a potential SQL injection that could be used to compromise a site, a fix for a potential timing side-channel attack, and prevents an attacker from locking a post from being edited. There were two security issues addressed and 17 bugs from version 4.4 and 4.4.1. This issue was reported to PHPMailer by <em>Dawid Golunski and Paul Buonopane<\/em>.<\/li><li>The REST API exposed user data for all users who had authored a post of a public post type. WordPress 4.7.1 limits this to only post types which have specified that they should be shown within the REST API.
