While Discord<\/a> is available for use in your favorite web browser, the number of features available may be limited. To get the full Discord experience, you will need to install Discord software on your local machine or mobile phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discord can be installed on many desktop operating systems, such as Windows, Apple, and Linux. We will explain how to install Discord on your iOS or Android mobile device.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before installing the application, please make sure that you have created a Discord account<\/a> and set up two-factor authentication to protect your Discord account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installing Discord on Windows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. To download Discord, go to the official Discord.com Download page<\/a><\/strong>. You will see Download for Windows<\/strong> as the first option. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Then, click Download for Windows<\/strong>.\u00a0 Note that the download file is about 67 MB.

  3. You will be prompted to download the DiscordSetup.exe<\/strong> file. Once it is finished, open the DiscordSetup.exe<\/strong> program by double-clicking on the file to start the installation process.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The program will then begin to install and download any required updates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. The program will then ask you to login using your Discord account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. After entering your login information, you will now be logged into the Discord software.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Installing Discord on Apple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1. Installing on an Apple computer is easy! Go to the Discord.com<\/a> page. It will auto-detect that you\u2019re on an Apple device and provide you the appropriate download option. If you don\u2019t see the Download for Mac <\/strong>option, then click on Downloads <\/strong>at the top of the page and select the download for your Apple computer.

    2. Click on the button labeled Download for Mac<\/strong>. Note that the file download is about 78 MB. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. You will see a Discord.dmg<\/strong>. Double-click on it to start the install process. Note that this also mounts Discord icon on your desktop. You can close this later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. You will see small window open that shows the Discord <\/strong>icon and the Applications <\/strong>folder. Simply left click and drag the Discord <\/strong>icon onto the Applications <\/strong>folder. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. This will complete the installation. Click on the Discord <\/strong>icon on your desktop and then select Eject<\/strong>. You can move the installation file to the trash as well, unless you wish to archive it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Installing Discord on Linux<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The process to install Discord on Linux is a bit more complicated than it is for mobile devices, Windows, or Apple computers. The more common Windows or Apple (Mac) operating systems often use a graphical interface for software installation. Linux-based computers oftentimes require the use of the command-line interface to fully install new software applications.

      We will explore how to install Discord on Ubuntu, Fedora, and CentOS.\u00a0Please note that the steps in this article will require the use of the       command-line interface<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Installing Discord on Ubuntu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The process of installing Discord on Ubuntu is relatively straightforward in comparison to other operating systems. The Discord for Linux package is available in both tar.gz and .deb formats and can be downloaded directly from the Discord website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      1. In your command line, use wget to download the package with the following command:
        wget -o discord.deb \u201chttps:\/\/discord.com\/api\/download?platform=linux&format=deb<\/a>\u201d<\/pre><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Then, install the package using the following command:
        sudo dpkg -i \/path\/to\/file\/<\/pre>The \/path\/to\/file\/ is the folder path to wherever the package was downloaded.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
        Installing Discord on Fedora<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
        The Discord application is packaged in the Canary Fedora repository. You can easily download and install it using the DNF package manager<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        1. In command line, use the following command to enable the Canary repository:
          dnf copr enable vishalv\/discord-canary<\/pre><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Next, use the following command to install the package:
          dnf install discord-canary<\/pre><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          Installing Discord on CentOS 7<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
          To install Discord on CentOS 7, you will first need to install the Snap package manager.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
            \n
          1. To install Snap, first ensure that you have enabled the EPEL repository using the following command in your command line:
            sudo yum install epel-release<\/pre><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Once that is done, you can install Snap using the following command:
            sudo yum install snapd<\/pre><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Next, enable Snap using the following command:
            sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket<\/pre><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. With Snap installed, you can now install Discord using the following command:
            sudo snap install discord<\/pre><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
            Install Discord on your Dedicated Server<\/a> to set up your own Discord community!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
            Installing Discord on Mobile<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
              \n
            1. Before beginning these steps, set up a Discord account<\/a> if you do not already have one.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. Visit the Google Play Store or App Store on iOS and search for Discord<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. On the page for the Discord app, press Download<\/strong> or Get<\/strong> to install the app.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            4. Once the app is finished installing, open it and log in using your Discord account information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
              Congratulations, you have successfully installed Discord on your mobile device!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
              Enabling Two-Factor Authentication for Discord<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
              For an added layer of security, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA)<\/a><\/strong> is an easy way to keep unauthorized users from accessing your Discord account and associated communities. In order to use this feature, you will need to have an authentication app such as Google Authenticator<\/strong> or Authy<\/strong>. For the purposes of this guide we will use Google Authenticator.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              1. To enable two-factor authentication, tap your Discord profile picture to open the User Settings<\/strong> menu.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              2. In the User Setting menu, select My Account to open the account management menu.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              3. Under the My Account menu, select the Enable Two-Factor Auth<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              4. The next page will provide you with instructions on how to set up the authentication using the code displayed under the section labeled 2FA Key (Manual Entry)<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              5. If you are using the Google Authenticator app, it will prompt you to input a code or scan a barcode. Select the option to input a code<\/strong> and input the 2FA Key provided by the Discord instructions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              6. After entering the 2FA Key, the Google Authenticator app should give you a 6-digit authentication code that you will then enter in the bottom section of the Discord 2FA menu. Once you\u2019ve entered the code, press Activate<\/strong> to enable 2FA using Google Authenticator.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                Adding SMS Authentication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
                In addition to 2FA via Google Authenticator, you can add your mobile number to use it as another authentication method via SMS messaging services.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
                  \n
                1. After enabling the 2FA functionality in Discord via the above steps, you should receive a prompt to Enable SMS Authentication. Select Add Phone Number<\/strong> to begin this process.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                2. On the next screen you will be prompted to enter your phone number. Once you press send<\/strong>, a text message will be sent to your phone with a 6-digit code<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                3. On the next screen, enter the 6-digit code you received via text to enable SMS authentication<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                  Congratulations, you have successfully set up 2FA and SMS Authentication for your Discord account!<\/p>\n\n\n

                  Configuring Discord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                  If you have never used Discord and you don\u2019t have an account, then the first thing you will need to do is register with Discord.com. If you have an existing account, then you simply have to log in and your previous user profile will load up. We do recommend that you still go through the configuration steps listed below in order to make sure that your audio and any keyboard\/mouse shortcuts are set up the way you want them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
                    \n
                  1. To ensure that your microphone and speakers are connected to the program, click on the small gear on the bottom left side of the Discord homepage<\/strong> to access User Settings<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  2. On the next page, click on Voice & Video<\/strong> on the left-hand side of the page.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  3. On this page, use the drop-down menus at the top to select which devices will be used with Discord. The input device<\/strong> will be your webcam or headset microphone, while the output device<\/strong> will be your speakers or headphones.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  4. In addition to changing the devices, you can also adjust the input volume<\/strong> to adjust how loudly your voice is transmitted over Discord as well as the output volume <\/strong>to adjust how loudly other users\u2019 voices will be played back via your speakers or headphones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  5. Next, you will want to choose your microphone input mode<\/strong>: 

                    Push-to-Talk:<\/strong> Allows you to designate a button on your mouse or keyboard to act as a Push-to-Talk key, meaning that you will have to press that button to transmit your voice over Discord. 

                    Voice Activation:<\/strong> Allows you to simply start speaking in order to start transmitting your voice. The volume at which the microphone activates is determined by the \u201cInput Sensitivity\u201d slider below the input modes.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                    Now that you have all of your input and output devices configured, you are all set to start using Discord!
