GtkHash<\/a> is a small desktop application that creates multiple types of checksums on Linux and Windows at once. GtkHash can also hash multiple files at once or text strings. This makes hashing faster for users on Windows, macOS<\/a>, and Linux<\/a> who do not use the command line interface often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember to follow best practices for using checksums<\/a> and how to troubleshoot reasons your checksum doesn\u2019t match the original<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Download GtkHash from your Linux package manager or Github.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Create a Checksum Without GtkHash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to creating checksums you do not have to have GtkHash installed. For many users, using SSH for creating checksums<\/a> is an option they already have installed in their local workstation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also create checksums on the command with fully managed VPS hosting<\/a> (and there are hosting packages that have SSH as well).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preferences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

GtkHash opens to show the single file section. The default hash functions are MD5, SHA1, SHA256, and CRC32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can change the used hash functions and digest format in the top navigation bar > Edit > Preferences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hash a File<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Click the folder icon beside File:<\/em><\/li>
  2. Open a file to hash<\/li>
  3. Add an expected checksum beside Check:<\/strong> if available<\/li>
  4. Select HMAC Key<\/strong> and add one if necessary<\/li>
  5. Select Hash<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. To hash multiple files, select View > File List<\/strong> from the top navigation menu<\/li>

    3. Open files you want to hash<\/li>
    4. Once you\u2019ve added all files, select Hash<\/strong><\/li>

      1. To hash text, select View > Text<\/strong> from the top navigation menu<\/li>
      2. Type text and the checksum will change in real time<\/li>
      3. Add an expected checksum or HMAC Key if needed<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Saving Hashes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
        1. To save visible hash results, select File > Save As<\/strong> from the top navigation menu<\/li>
        2. Specify a file name and Save<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
