By disabling the one problematic site on your account causing excessive resource usage, you can continue to have your other sites and email run unaffected by a possible suspension.<\/p>\n<h2>Disabling problematic site via .htaccess<\/h2>\n<p>Using the steps below I\u2019ll show you how we can temporarily disable a site called\u00a0<strong>example.com<\/strong>\u00a0on my account using a .htaccess file, so that it doesn\u2019t cause problems for the other domains on my account.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"article_list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/how-to-log-into-cpanel\/\">Login to your cPanel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cpanel_file-manager-paper-lantern.png\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"964\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cpanel_file-manager-paper-lantern.png\" class=\"optimized-lcp-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>Under the <strong>Files<\/strong> section, click on <strong>File Manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Locate your <em>.htaccess<\/em> file, you may have to <a href=\"\/support\/website\/show-hidden-files-in-file-manager\/\">show hidden files<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cpanel_edit-htaccess.png\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"std_ss alignright size-full wp-image-5851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cpanel_edit-htaccess.png\" style=\"width: 160px; margin-left: 10px; float: right;\" width=\"584\" height=\"582\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>Right-click on the <strong>.htaccess<\/strong> file and select <strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>If your <strong>.htaccess<\/strong> file didn\u2019t exist already during the previous step, click on <strong>+File<\/strong> at the top-left, name the file <strong>.htaccess<\/strong>, and finally set the directory for the file to be created to <strong>\/public_html\/<\/strong> or the document root of your site.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cpanel_edit-text-editor.png\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"std_ss alignright size-full wp-image-5852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cpanel_edit-text-editor.png\" style=\"width: 160px; margin-left: 10px; float: right;\" width=\"549\" height=\"374\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>You might have a text editor encoding dialog box pop-up, you can simply click on <strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Enter in the following code in your .htaccess file to disable the site:<code>ErrorDocument 503 \"&lt;h1&gt;Site temporarily down for troubleshooting&lt;\/h1&gt;\"<\/code>\n<p><code><br>\n<\/code><code>RewriteEngine On<br>\nRewriteRule .* - [R=503,L]<\/code><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/website_website-troubleshooting_disable-problematic-site_save-changes.png\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"file editor click on save-changes\" class=\"std_ss\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/website_website-troubleshooting_disable-problematic-site_save-changes.png\" style=\"width: 160px; margin-left: 10px; float: right;\" width=\"1125\" height=\"164\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>Then click on <strong>Save Changes<\/strong> up in the top-right of the text editor.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n<p>This will serve a <strong>503<\/strong> response to every request. This response code signifies a temporary server issue and search engine bots know to attempt their requests again at a later time so it doesn\u2019t affect your search engine rankings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/website_website-troubleshooting_disable-problematic-site_503-error-displayed.png\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"503-error-displayed\" class=\"std_ss\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/website_website-troubleshooting_disable-problematic-site_503-error-displayed.png\" style=\"width: 160px; margin-left: 10px; float: right;\" width=\"621\" height=\"124\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"alert\">If you leave these rules in place for more than 2 days search engines such as Google could start interpreting these temporary issues as longer lasting ones, and this could affect your search engine ranking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should now understand how to temporarily disable a problematic site so that your entire account isn\u2019t affected by its usage.
