You\u2019ll need to find out where the website files are stored, any applicable databases, and how to obtain a backup of them. It is best to contact your current hosting provider to obtain this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that if later you realize you need more or less in your hosting plan, you can easily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/amp\/upgrade-downgrade-hosting-plan\/\">downgrade or upgrade your hosting plan<\/a> in your Account Management Panel (AMP). We\u2019ll assist you with the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"download\">Download Backups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list article_list\">\n<li>Create backups using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/cpanel-backups\/\">cPanel backups<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/website\/ftp\/getting-started-guide\/\">FTP<\/a>, or other methods from your current hosting provider. Ensure it includes any applicable database SQL files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download the backups to local storage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/security\/verify-checksums-ssh\/\">Verify the checksum<\/a> of your backup files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test that your backups work by reuploading them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mode\">Maintenance Mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to communicate with our support staff about the best time to complete the process. Also, before transferring your website, you should decide whether to set up a maintenance page to prevent data loss during the migration. This ensures no new content is added during the transfer. E-commerce website owners will want to set this up to halt orders. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/amp\/how-to-log-into-amp\/\">How-To guide available<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <strong>Website Transfer Request<\/strong> icon <em>within<\/em> the subscription you wish to migrate your site into.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the next screen, you will see a blue button that reads <strong>Submit A Transfer Request<\/strong>. Click on this button to proceed.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-95250\" style=\"max-width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AMP-Select-Website-Transfer-Request.png\" alt=\"Click on Submit A Transfer Request\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The next page will allow you to enter information to facilitate the transfer process. To help ensure a quality transfer, we will explain a few of the entries on this form below:<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-95251\" style=\"max-width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Transfer-a-Website-Form-Part-1.png\" alt=\"Transfer a Website Form Part 1\"><br><br>\u2022 <strong>Previous Host<\/strong> \u2013 This question determines whether you are transferring data from one InMotion Hosting account to another, or from a different hosting provider. If you are transferring from an external provider, you will be prompted to provide that host\u2019s login credentials.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Is this hosting account managed with cPanel?<\/strong> \u2013 This question is to determine if your hosting account is managed with cPanel, the popular control panel software used by many different hosting providers. If you are unsure that your account uses cPanel, check with your hosting provider to learn more.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Login Credentials to Hosting Account<\/strong> \u2013 Whether your hosting account is with InMotion or another provider, we require the login URL, username, and password. Providing this information upfront will help speed up the process.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Is 2FA enabled on this account?<\/strong> \u2013 This question is to determine if your hosting account has two-factor authentication enabled. This generally involves the use of a connected device to verify login attempts. In the event of a website transfer, you will want to temporarily disable this functionality to allow our technicians to access your data.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you have entered all the data above, please provide the following information:<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Additional information<\/strong> to help us locate your data and complete your request. For example, domain names and database names of the site you\u2019d like transferred.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Website(s) Being Transferred<\/strong> \u2013 Provide the domain for each website separately. You can add more websites by clicking on the \u201cAdd Another Website\u201d link.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Preferred Contact Method<\/strong> \u2013 Please provide the best email address for contacting you, your web developer, or your agency. This should be the email of the person best suited to respond quickly regarding the status of your migration. Note that adding a new email here will grant that user access and permission to communicate with our Support Team on your behalf.<br><br>\u2022 <strong>Priority Website Transfer Request<\/strong> \u2013 While the system defaults to the regular transfer, you can pay an additional fee to receive expedited service. Paying for the expedited service means your request will be among the first to be reviewed by a website transfer specialist.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-95252\" style=\"max-width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Transfer-a-Website-Form-Part-2-final.png\" alt=\"Transfer a Website Form Part 2\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Continue<\/strong> button to proceed. The next page will present all the data you entered for confirmation. If you find a mistake, simply use the <strong>Go Back<\/strong> button to return to the previous page and make the necessary updates. If everything looks correct, click the <strong>Submit<\/strong> button to complete this process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be presented with the confirmation screen. Your website transfer request is now in the appropriate queue and will be worked on by our Support Technicians in the order it was received. You will receive emails from our Support Team throughout the transfer process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"launch\">Launch Assist Time for Website Transfers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/blog\/launch-assist-managed-hosting\/\">Launch Assist<\/a> is a service that is provided by InMotion\u2019s Professional Solutions Team for Virtual Private Server (VPS) and Dedicated Server subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Launch Assist there\u2019s no need to worry about transferring content, databases, or configurations. An expert system administrator will give your website and email content first-class treatment, and keep you updated throughout the transfer process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your subscription type, you will get 2-4 hours of free service. This can cover the transition of your website from another server to your InMotion Hosting server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Website transfers completed within the 2-4 hours of Launch Assist time that is provided with your VPS or Dedicated server account do not incur a charge as long as they are completed within that time frame.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional costs for transfers are handled by the Professional Solutions team after reviewing each request. Typically, website transfers will include website files, media files, and\/or databases as long as the appropriate information is provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most website transfers will normally fall within the 2-4 hour time period for transfer completion. In the event that your website transfer request exceeds that time, the Professional Solutions team will review your request to ensure you are provided an appropriate estimate of the added time and additional cost required to complete the transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-info\">Take the website transfer time frame as an opportunity to create validated copies of your website or server backup. It\u2019s best to have at least one backup copy duplicated on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-portable-ssd\">local external drive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"status\">Transfer Process and Status Review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your website transfer request is received, you will receive a confirmation email. Before any file migration process is started, a Website Transfer specialist will review the submitted information and go through the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list article_list\">\n<li>Review access details and calculate costs or time requirements for the request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A transfer specialist will email you to:<br>\u2022 Acknowledge any access-related issues or requests for additional information.<br>\u2022 Communicate any charges associated with the website transfer services. An acknowledgment will be necessary before InMotion can start the migration request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform you when the migration is started via email and update the website transfer request status on your ticket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send a follow-up email to notify you once the initial migration is completed with testing instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set website transfer status to <strong>Pending <\/strong>during the testing process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update the website transfer request status to <strong>Completed<\/strong> if the work is finished, or <strong>Cancelled<\/strong> if the work cannot be completed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Website Transfer Status can be determined by logging into your <strong>Account Management Panel (AMP<\/strong>). Simply click on the <strong>Website Transfer Request<\/strong> icon and you will be shown a list of your ongoing transfer. Things to test include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Internal and external links<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backend tasks and checks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/website\/check-and-repair-databases-in-cpanel\/\">Database checks and repairs<\/a> in cPanel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Custom DNS Records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email\u00a0Accounts (transferred only with cPanel Migrations)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To properly test your site, we recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/website\/modifying-your-hosts-file\/\">editing your hosts file<\/a>. When the migration is finished, the Website Transfer team will send you the additional information that is specific to your website(s) for testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-warning\">Alternatively, you can test the website using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/website\/using-your-temporary-url\/\">temporary URL<\/a>, but it is important to note that this may cause some aspects of your site to not display properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"email\">Check Your Email<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emails are transferred during the migration process if they are hosted within the same cPanel account as the websites being migrated. If your email is stored in a separate server from your website or hosted with a 3rd Party Email Service provider, additional steps need to be taken.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you had email on a separate server with your old hosting provider, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/email\/transferring-emails-from-your-old-host-to-inmotion-hosting\/\">move the actual email files<\/a> using an email app such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/email\/301-using-thunderbird-to-transfer-emails-between-servers\/\">Thunderbird<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those looking to use another email provider should check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/domain-names\/dns-nameserver-changes\/change-dns-records-to-use-3rd-party-services\/#website-with-3rdparty\">3rd party email article<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterward, you can configure your email client with the new email accounts using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/tools\/email-configuration\/\">email configuration tool<\/a>. We recommend secure SSL IMAP or Standard IMAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dns\">Update DNS Records<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve confirmed the website works, you\u2019ll need to update the DNS settings for users to be redirected to your new server.
