Many Wix users reach a point where they want more command and control over how their website(s) work. Many decide to migrate to the WordPress CMS<\/abbr> (WordPress.org, not WordPress.com<\/a>) for many reasons<\/a> such as how easy it is to learn and its capabilities for novice and experienced users alike.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there\u2019s no easy way to migrate a Wix website into WordPress<\/strong>. Much of the migration is customizing WordPress to suit your needs and mirror your Wix site as you see fit before copy-pasting text and uploading media files. You may be able to import some pages easiest via RSS<\/abbr>, though. Only after migrating all data and checking that everything works should you update any DNS settings.<\/p>\n

Install WordPress<\/a> Import RSS<\/a> Manual Migration<\/a> Upload Images<\/a> Permalinks<\/a> DNS Settings<\/a> <\/a><\/p>\n

Install WordPress<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Install WordPress<\/strong> manually<\/a> with via Softaculous<\/a>. If you used a Wix subdomain \u2013 e.g. user.wixsite.com\/sitename<\/em>, you can use your temporary URL<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Install and customize a preferred WordPress theme<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n
  3. Install any preferred and recommended plugins<\/strong><\/a> such as for backups<\/a>, security<\/a>, and optimization<\/a>.
    \nWe recommend checking out     Updraft<\/a>, WordFence<\/a>, and W3 Total Cache<\/a> respectively.<\/li>\n
  4. Modify your primary menu<\/strong><\/a> to match your Wix website.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/a><\/p>\n

    Import Content<\/h2>\n

    Text and media files are imported using different methods. As stated earlier, the RSS file may reduce the workload, but text and images from many pages will need to be imported manually.<\/p>\n

    Import RSS Feed<\/h3>\n

    If possible, importing your Wix RSS feed<\/strong> can cut hours from the migration process.<\/p>\n

      1. Login your Wix website<\/a>.<\/li>\n
      2. Add \/feed.xml<\/em> to the end of your website URL \u2013
        \ne.g. domain.com\/feed.xml<\/em> or user.wixsite.com\/sitename\/feed.xml<\/em> .<\/li>\n
      3. Right-click on the page and save the file<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      4. In WordPress, select Tools<\/strong> and Import<\/strong>.

      5. Select Run Importer<\/strong>.

      6. Browse for your RSS file before selecting Upload file and import<\/strong>.

        The imported content should now show in Posts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        <\/a><\/p>\n

        Import Content Manually<\/h3>\n

        For anything the RSS feed doesn\u2019t import, copying text from your Wix site to individual WordPress pages and posts<\/strong> will be the only option for migrating content.<\/p>\n

        1. Create a new WordPress page or post<\/a>.<\/li>\n
        2. Copy the text from a page on your Wix website and paste it into the WordPress visual editor<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        3. Edit the WordPress page or post<\/strong> to your preference.<\/li>\n
        4. Save Draft<\/strong> or Publish<\/strong> to save your work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          <\/a><\/p>\n

          Import Images<\/h3>\n

          There are two ways to import images from your Wix website<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. \n
              \n
            1. Use a WordPress plugin<\/strong> such as Save & Import Image from URL<\/a> to import directly from Wix.
              \nThe easiest way to get an image URL:
              \nChrome<\/strong>: Right-click the image and select Open image in a new tab<\/strong>.
              \nFirefox<\/strong>: Right-click the image and select View Image<\/strong>.
              \nGeneric<\/strong>: Right-click the image and select Inspect Element<\/strong> to view the URL within the source code.<\/li>\n
            2. Download then manually upload all media files<\/strong> to your WordPress media library<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Note<\/strong>: Although you can upload images using FTP or cPanel File Manager<\/a>, only media files uploaded to the WordPress media library can be selected from it.<\/p>\n

              <\/a><\/p>\n

              Fix Permalinks<\/h2>\n

              Permalinks determine the format of your website URL\u2019s<\/strong>. You\u2019ll likely want to change this to match the URL\u2019s from your older website to ensure users don\u2019t get 404 errors while trying view any saved links. The most common options are Post name<\/em> and Month and name<\/em>. You can reset these settings at any time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

              1. While logged into your WordPress site, hover over Settings<\/strong> and select Permalinks<\/strong>.

                Change DNS Settings<\/h2>\n

                After copying all data from Wix to your WordPress site, you\u2019ll need to update your domain settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                If you bought a custom domain with Wix<\/strong>, you\u2019ll need to change the A record at Wix.com<\/a> to match your server IP shown in cPanel<\/a> or transfer your domain<\/a> to us or elsewhere before changing the nameservers to ns1.inmotionhosting.com<\/em> and ns2.inmotionhosting.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n

                If you bought your domain elsewhere<\/strong> and pointed it to Wix, you\u2019ll need to change your domain\u2019s A record to match your server IP shown in cPanel<\/a> or nameservers to ns1.inmotionhosting.com<\/em> and ns2.inmotionhosting.com<\/em> .<\/p>\n

                Note<\/strong>: We recommend checking your WordPress website using a hosts file modification<\/a> to ensure everything works before changing any DNS settings. Note that DNS changes may require ~4-24hrs to take effect.<\/p>\n

                If you used a Wix subdomain<\/strong> \u2013 e.g. user.wixsite.com\/sitename\/<\/em>, you\u2019ll need to purchase a domain<\/a> to connect with your web hosting. In the meantime, you can use your temporary URL<\/a>.<\/p>\n
