Moving or renaming files can be accomplished with the mv<\/em> command.<\/p>\n

Command: <\/strong>mv
Synopsis: <\/strong> mv [OPTION]… [-T] SOURCE DEST
mv [OPTION]… SOURCE… DIRECTORY
mv [OPTION]… -t DIRECTORY SOURCE… <\/p>\n

Options: <\/strong>
Below is a list of the options that can be used with the mv<\/em> command. You can use more than one at a time by stacking them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/td>\n–backup[=CONTROL]<\/td>\nMake a backup of each existing destination file.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-b<\/td>\n<\/td>\nLike –backup but does not accept an argument.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-S<\/td>\n-suffix=SUFFIX<\/td>\nOverride the usual backup suffix.\/td> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-t<\/td>\n–target-directory=DIRECTORY<\/td>\nMove all SOURCE arguments into DIRECTORY<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-T<\/td>\n–no-target-directory<\/td>\nTreat DEST as a normal file.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-u<\/td>\n–update<\/td>\nPerforms the move only when the SOURCE file is newer than the destination file or when the destination file is missing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
-v<\/td>\n–verbose<\/td>\nDisplays an explanation of what is being done.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\n–help<\/td>\nDisplay this help and exit.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\n–version<\/td>\nOutput version information and exit.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

Examples<\/h2>\n

Renaming a file<\/strong> When renaming a file in the same directory, no directory information is included. The only parameters needed are the old and new file names. Below we rename the original oldtext.txt<\/em> file to newtext.txt<\/em>. <\/p>\n

mv oldtext.txt newtext.txt<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n

Moving a file to another directory<\/strong> In this example we are moving the file somefile.txt<\/em> to a subfolder named level2<\/em>. The second parameter includes the relative path as well as the file name. <\/p>\n

mv somefile.txt level2\/somefile.txt<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n

Moving to another folder while renaming<\/strong> This example is much like the example above, but we are also renaming the file as it is moved. The second parameter includes the destination folder as well as the new name. <\/p>\n
