It includes how to find MODx, describes the settings, and completes the installation once you have made all of the settings. It also includes a section on getting started with MODx.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#install\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Installing MODx with Softaculous<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#startingMODx\" data-toggle=\"tab\">Getting Started with MODx<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Install MODx using Softaculous in cPanel<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"article_list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/how-to-log-into-cpanel\/\">Login to the cPanel.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Locate and click on <a href=\"\/support\/product-guides\/softaculous\/install-software-softaculous\/\">Softaculous<\/a> icon in the <b>Software\/Services<\/b> section of cPanel.<\/li>\n<li>When the Softaculous screen appears, go to the top right corner and click on the <b>SEARCH<\/b> field. Type in \u201cMODx\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The next screen will be the MODx installation screen in Softaculous. Make sure to review the requirements for installation and the version. If the version that you\u2019re seeing is good, and you have the available hard drive space, go to the top right and click on the blue button labeled <b>INSTALL<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>You will then be required to fill in the information for installing. The screenshot below illustrates the screen that you will see. Below the image is the list of the settings and description of each.<br>\n<a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx-install_softaculous-modx-setup.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx-install_softaculous-modx-setup.png\" class=\"optimized-lcp-image\" alt=\"Settings screen for MODx installation\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<table class=\"table-hover\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Installation setting<\/th>\n<th>Description<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Choose Protocol<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">If you are using a SSL certificate for your URL, then select <em>HTTPS<\/em>, otherwise use <em>HTTP<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Choose Domain<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Domains that can be selected must be registered in the cPanel as either the primary domain, add-on domain, or subdomain.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>In Directory<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">The directory is the location where the files will be installed. Leave the entry empty of you wish for the files to be installed to the root of the domain name. Otherwise, type in the name of the folder you wish to use. This folder cannot already exist in the folder as Softaculous will create the folder if an entry has been added.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Database Name<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Name of the database that is created for you within the server. You can change the name, or use the default name created by the installation<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Site Name<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Name of the MODx site that you\u2019re creating. This can be simply text describing the site<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Table Prefix<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Each table that is created the database will start with this prefix. You can use the default value \u201cMODx_\u201d or create your own prefix.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Admin Username<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Name of the Administrator used for logging into the Administrator<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Admin Password<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Password used for the admin. Note that there is a password strength indicator that will let you know if the password you enter is good. Click on the key to have a password automatically generated for you.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Admin email<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Email address of the administrator<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Advanced Options<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Click on the <b>+<\/b>(plus) sign to expand the advanced options.\n<p><i>Disable Update Notifications<\/i> \u2013 Softaculous will notify you when updates are available unless you disable it here.<\/p>\n<p><i>Automated backups<\/i> -Softaculous has the ability to make automated backups of the installation using a CRON job.<\/p>\n<p><i>Backup Rotation<\/i> \u2013 This is the number backups that will be made before it starts overwriting the files. For example, if you use the default value of \u201c4\u201d, then 4 backups will be made. On the 5th backup, the first file will be overwritten. This is done to preserve hard drive space.<\/p><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>INSTALL<\/b> button<\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">Click this button to start the Softaculous installation of MODx using the settings you have entered<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><b>Email installation details to<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"left\">In order to get a copy of the installation settings that you have entered, click on the field and add your email address.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This completes the installation of MODx using Softaculous. For more information on using Softaculous for application installation, please go to <a href=\"\/support\/product-guides\/softaculous\/install-software-softaculous\/\">Installing Programs Using Softaculous.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"startingMODx\" class=\"tab-pane\">\n<p>You have loaded MODx Revolution, but now you need to start building the website.\u00a0 One of the first steps in learning how to use MODx is learning how to start creating\/adding your content a web page or document.\u00a0 The following tutorial will walk you through the most simple process of making a document web page in MODx.\u00a0 There will be a brief introduction to the interface and you will be able to see the resulting page created the addition of text and a few simple HTML commands.<\/p>\n<h2>Introduction to Creating a MODx Document<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"article_list\">\n<li>Log into the MODx Dashboard as an Administrator<\/li>\n<li>After logging into the MODx dashboard, you should see a screen similar to the following:<br>\n<a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-modx-dashboard-start3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-modx-dashboard-start3.png\" alt=\"First you see after logging into MODx\" style=\"max-width:600px;display:block;\"><\/a>Resources for MODx include documents, weblinks, symlinks and static resources, but we will be concentrating primarily on documents in order to give you a basic introduction.\u00a0 The screenshot above gives you a quick summary with the interface that you will see when you first log-in to the MODx Dashboard as an administrator.\u00a0 The interface highlighted in yellow is the <em>Resource Tree <\/em>which can be used by other resources that this interface will help you reach as you become familiar with MODx.\u00a0 Resources that make up your website will always be listed in this interface.\u00a0 When you first load MODx, the base page will be a blank white page.\u00a0 If you do not see your resources expanded, then click on the green-arrow pointing down in order expand the tree. The screenshot below gives you a quick summary of the different sections of the resource navigator (note: only the <strong>DOCUMENT RESOURCE<\/strong> specific options are displayed). <a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-resource-nav-window.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-resource-nav-window.png\" alt=\"Resource Navigation window - concentrating on document resource\" style=\"max-width:600px;display:block;\"><\/a>For now, look for the document named <strong>HOME <\/strong>(as shown above), and left-click on it to proceed.<\/li>\n<li>When you select a document resource within the resource tree, the interface to the right of the resource tree will change showing you the document resource edit window for the resource that you have selected. In this case, you have clicked on a document resource, so you should see the following:<a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-home-web-doc-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_document-home-web-doc-2.png\" alt=\"Document resource editor\" style=\"max-width:600px;display:block;\"><\/a> If you click on <strong>VIEW<\/strong> in the top right hand corner, you will be able to see the home page in a separate window.\u00a0 This page is your front-end website being generated by MODx.\u00a0 Since the <strong>CONTENT<\/strong> section is blank, then there is nothing on the page.\u00a0 This means that when you view the site, it will be a blank white page.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a quick table describing each option in the interface (above the content field):<br>\n<table class=\"article_table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Title<\/th>\n<td>This is the page title of the document<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Uses Template<\/th>\n<td>The template used to format the page<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Long Title<\/th>\n<td>A longer version of the page title<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Resource Alias<\/th>\n<td>Alias used when there are friendly URLs. For example, if the alias is \u2018friendlyURL\u2019 and content type is HTML, then the friendly URL would become \u201cfriendlyURL.html\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Description<\/th>\n<td>Description of the page<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Menu Title<\/th>\n<td>Title used for menu entry<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Summary (introtext)<\/th>\n<td>Summarizes content for search purposes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Link Attributes<\/th>\n<td>Used with menu building snippets<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Hide from menus<\/th>\n<td>Prevents this document resource from being displayed in the menus<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Published<\/th>\n<td>Indicates of the page appears to the public or not<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>There are many options and settings that can be used when creating a document resource.\u00a0 For the purposes of this tutorial we will only be showing plain text and how it can be modified with simple HTML.<\/p>\n<p>Click in the<strong> LONG TITLE<\/strong> field and type in \u201csample home page\u201d.\u00a0 (note: The quotation marks should be left out in all of the entries).<\/p><\/li>\n<li>Next, click in the <strong>DESCRIPTION<\/strong> field and type in \u201cThis is a sample home page to learn how to add quick page of text.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the field to the right labeled <strong>MENU TITLE<\/strong>, type in \u201chome\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Below the <strong>DESCRIPTION<\/strong> is the <strong>SUMMARY (Introtext)<\/strong> field.\u00a0 Click in that field and type in same thing as in the description: \u201cThis is a sample home page to learn how to add quick page of text.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If the <strong>PUBLISHED<\/strong> option is not already checked, then place a checkmark in the box.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>CONTENT<\/strong> section contains the actual content of the page.\u00a0 In this case we\u2019re just going to add the following text:<br>\nA simple web site<br>\nBits of words and pictures make<br>\nSomething with nothing\n<p>You an copy and paste the above text into the content field, or you can type whatever you wish instead of my whimsical haiku.<\/p><\/li>\n<li>At the top right hand of the page is a floating menu bar that has the option <strong>SAVE<\/strong>.\u00a0 Click on <strong>SAVE<\/strong> to save your text entries.<\/li>\n<li>In that same menu bar, click on <strong>VIEW<\/strong>.\u00a0 A separate window will open in the browser you are using showing the text.\u00a0 You should see this:<br>\n<a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_text-noformatting2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_text-noformatting2.png\" alt=\"Text on MODx page with no formatting\" style=\"max-width:600px;display:block;\"><\/a><br>\nNote that the text is unformatted and even though you may have pasted it in paragraph form as per step 8, the text is set in one long line.\u00a0 Although it is not formatted as we wish, this shows how quickly you can start creating a web page using the MODx interface.\u00a0 There are many options that you can use here, but again we\u2019re going to provide a simple demonstration of the MODx interface.\u00a0 One of the most basic and powerful options used to manipulate web pages within MODx is HTML.\u00a0 For this we will provide the HTML code in the following example:\n<p class=\"code_block\">&lt;h1&gt;My Simple Website&lt;\/h1&gt;<br>\n&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;<br>\n&lt;p&gt;<br>\nA simple web site &lt;br \/&gt;<br>\nBits of words and pictures make&lt;br \/&gt;<br>\nSomething with nothing &lt;br \/&gt;<br>\n&lt;\/p&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Copy this code exactly as you see it above and replace the text that you previously typed within the <strong>CONTENT<\/strong> field.<\/p><\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>SAVE<\/strong> in the top right hand corner.<\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>VIEW<\/strong> in the menu bar and you should see the following:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/edu_modx_document_text-withhtmlformatting2.png\" alt=\"Text with basic HTMl formatting\" style=\"max-width:600px;display:block;\">This example shows the results of the formatting and uses three simple simple HTML commands to format the text:&lt;h1&gt;&lt;\/h1&gt; \u2013 Header command<br>\n&lt;br \/&gt; \u2013 line break<br>\n&lt;p&gt; &lt;\/p&gt; \u2013 paragraph<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As you can see, just entering a few basic commands can quickly transform the text that you enter into something much easier to read.\u00a0 MODx was created with HTML in mind, so all HTML (PHP) commands will work when creating the pages.\u00a0 Additionally, you can load an editor into the interface so that you have the editor creating the formatted text instead of manually typing in the HTML code.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following article shows you how to setup the MODx content management system using the Softaculous installation program.
