Because WordPress brute force attacks<\/a> are on the rise, using a WordPress plugin like Lockdown WP Admin<\/strong> can help by allowing you to change the WordPress default login URL. This way attackers won\u2019t have access to your admin login form, so they can\u2019t continually try to guess your password and break in.<\/p>\n

You also want to make sure after you install Lockdown WP Admin<\/a>, be sure to hide the secret URL from the Meta widget<\/a> so that an attacker can\u2019t discover your new server admin address.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Install and configure the Lockdown WP Admin WordPress plugin<\/h2>\n

Using the steps below you can quickly install the Lockdown WP Admin<\/strong> plugin and configure it so that your normal WordPress login URLs of \/wp-admin<\/strong> and wp-login.php<\/strong> are changed.<\/p>\n

  1. Login to WordPress admin dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. For this plugin to function correctly your site must first be be using WordPress permalinks<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Hover over Plugins<\/strong>, then click on Add New<\/strong><\/li>\n

  4. Type in Lockdown WP Admin<\/strong>, then click on Search Plugins<\/strong><\/li>\n

    \"type<\/a><\/p>\n

  5. Click on Install Now<\/strong> beside the Lockdown WP Admin<\/strong> plugin<\/li>\n

    \"click<\/a><\/p>\n

  6. Click OK<\/strong> on the confirmation pop-up window<\/li>\n

    \"click<\/a><\/p>\n

  7. Click Activate Plugin<\/strong><\/li>\n

    \"click<\/a><\/p>\n

  8. Hover over the new Lockdown WP<\/strong>, then click on Lockdown WP<\/strong><\/li>\n

  9. Place a check beside Yes, please hide WP Admin from the user\u2026<\/strong><\/li>\n

    \"configure<\/a><\/p>\n

  10. Change your WordPress Login URL<\/strong> to something like secret-admin<\/strong><\/li>\n

    Leave Disable HTTP Auth<\/strong> selected, click Save Options<\/strong><\/p>\n

  11. Hover over Howdy, User<\/strong>, then click on Log Out<\/strong><\/li>\n

  12. You should see the secret-admin<\/strong> URL you set<\/li>\n

  13. Try to directly access \/wp-admin<\/strong> or wp-login.php<\/strong>, you get a 404 page<\/li>\n

  14. Access the \/secret-admin<\/strong> URL and you get your WordPress login page<\/li>\n

    Prevent WordPress Meta widget from exposing secret login URL<\/h2>\n

    Unfortunately while the Lockdown WP Admin<\/strong> plugin does a great job securing your site from bots that might continually try to hit the default login URLs, it also updates the Meta widget<\/strong> in WordPress with the new updated URL as seen below:<\/p>\n

    There are two ways in which you can prevent your secret login URL from being shown like this.<\/p>\n

    Remove Meta widget from WordPress<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. Login to WordPress admin dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n
    2. Hover over Appearance<\/strong>, then click on Widgets<\/strong><\/li>\n

      \"hover<\/a><\/p>\n

    3. Click on the Meta<\/strong> widget, then click on Delete<\/strong><\/li>\n

      \"click<\/a><\/p><\/ol>\n

      Edit WordPress general-template.php file to hide Log In link<\/h3>\n
        \n
      1. You can also simply edit the Log in<\/strong> link from displaying on your WordPress site by editing your template file. Although note that if you are doing it this way, future WordPress updates might override the files in your \/wp-includes<\/strong> and revert your changes, so keep that in mind.<\/li>\n
      2. Use the cPanel File Manager Code Editor<\/a><\/li>\n
      3. Navigate to your \/wp-includes<\/strong> directory<\/li>\n

      4. Right-click<\/strong> on general-template.php<\/strong>, then click Edit<\/strong><\/li>\n

      5. Look for this line of code:<\/li>\n
