{"id":2977,"date":"2013-11-14T23:41:52","date_gmt":"2013-11-15T04:41:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/2013\/11\/14\/using-a-secondary-hard-drive-on-a-dedicated-server\/"},"modified":"2023-08-21T08:51:16","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T12:51:16","slug":"using-a-secondary-hard-drive-on-a-dedicated-server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/product-guides\/dedicated-hosting\/using-a-secondary-hard-drive-on-a-dedicated-server\/","title":{"rendered":"Using a Secondary Hard Drive on a Dedicated Server"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/dedicated-servers\" target=\"_blank\">dedicated server<\/a> with 2 hard drives, there might come a time when your primary hard drive is starting to become full, and you\u2019d like to utilize your secondary hard drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can either simply <a href=\"\/support\/website\/security\/password-strength\/#ftp-account\">create an FTP account with access to your secondary hard drive<\/a> to start uploading files there for storage, or you can go all out and <a href=\"\/support\/website\/security\/password-strength\/#rearrange-cpanel-account\">rearrange your cPanel account<\/a> to actually use the secondary hard drive for all of their files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#disk-usage\">Find Disk Usage on Server<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#rearrange-cpanel-account\">Rearrange cPanel Account onto Secondary Drive<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#ftp-account\">Create a Separate FTP Account on Secondary Hard Drive<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-warning\">Please note that to follow either of these options you need to have root access to your dedicated server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a Secondary Drive allows you to have more options and features that you can make use of for your account.  They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additional data redundancy, and storage space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to separate data and application files<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make use of FTP for file management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make use of cPanel Configuration options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"disk-usage\">Find Disk Usage on Server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to setting up anything on your secondary hard drive, you should understand the current disk usage on your server which is very simple to review following these steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\">\n<li>Login via <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/support\/server\/ssh\/how-to-login-ssh\/\" target=\"_blank\">SSH<\/a> as the root user on your server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run the following command: <br><br><strong>df -h <\/strong><br><br>You should get an output similar to this: <br><br><strong>Filesystem                            Size        Used      Avail     Use%   Mounted on  <br><\/strong>\/dev\/sdb1                             222G     186G       25G       89%    \/ <br><strong><em>\/dev\/sda1                             226G     228M      214G         1%    \/home2<\/em><\/strong><br> tmpfs                                    2.0G            0       2.0G         0%   \/dev\/shm <br>\/usr\/tmpDSK                        485M       12M     448M        3%    \/tmp<br><br>I have bolded and italicized the secondary drive on this server indicated by<em> <strong>\/home2<\/strong><\/em>. You can see we\u2019re using up about <strong>89%<\/strong> of the available disk space on our primary hard drive, with <strong>25GB<\/strong> to spare. <br><br>Let\u2019s say you know you need to upload <strong>30GB<\/strong> worth of files to store on your server, since you still have <strong>214GB<\/strong> free on the secondary hard drive you could use that instead of filling your primary hard drive past capacity.<br><br><br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rearrange-cpanel-account\">Rearrange cPanel Account onto Secondary Drive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re running out of hard drive space on your primary drive, and still need to upload website files directly to your cPanel account, you can rearrange the cPanel account to have its home directory on your secondary drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could also just <a href=\"\/support\/website\/security\/password-strength\/#ftp-account\">create a separate FTP account on the secondary hard drive<\/a> if you just needed some more file storage separate from your primary hard drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/support\/edu\/whm\/log-into-whm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Login to WHM<\/a> on your dedicated server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the top-left search box, type <strong>rearrange<\/strong>. Depending on the size of your cPanel account this could take some time. You should see a success message once the move is complete:<\/strong><br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"247\" class=\"wp-image-100019\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/re-arrange-account.jpg\" alt=\"Re-arrange account\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/re-arrange-account.jpg 706w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/re-arrange-account-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now whenever you upload files for this cPanel account, it will be uploaded to your secondary drive instead of continuing to fill up the primary one. You can verify this on the server by running: <br><br><strong>file \/home\/example <br><\/strong><br>The server should spit back: <br><br><strong>\/home\/example:  symbolic link to `\/home2\/example\u2019 <\/strong><br><br>This shows that nothing will be uploaded to the primary hard drive on <strong>\/home<\/strong> for this <strong>example<\/strong> cPanel user, as their home directory on the primary drive is simply a symbolic link to their home directory on the secondary drive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ftp-account\">Create a Separate FTP Account on Secondary Hard Drive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you just need to store some files on your servers such as database backups, or something you aren\u2019t going to directly use on your website right away. You can simply create a 2nd FTP account on your secondary hard drive to upload these types of files there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These files would only be accessible over FTP. You wouldn\u2019t be able to access them from cPanel, or via your website. If you need that you can <a href=\"\/support\/website\/security\/password-strength\/#rearrange-cpanel-account\">rearrange a cPanel account onto the secondary drive<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/support\/edu\/cpanel\/how-to-log-into-cpanel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Login to the cPanel<\/a> account where you wish to create an FTP account for your secondary drive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the Files section, click on <strong>FTP Accounts<\/strong>. <br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"364\" class=\"wp-image-12817\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_cPanel_ftpAccountsIcon_highlight.png\" alt=\"click on ftp accounts\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_cPanel_ftpAccountsIcon_highlight.png 821w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_cPanel_ftpAccountsIcon_highlight-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_cPanel_ftpAccountsIcon_highlight-768x399.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill in the details for a new FTP user, in this case, you can see I\u2019m naming mine <strong>2ndDrive@example.com<\/strong> and assigning the user\u2019s directory to be <strong>\/home\/example\/public_html\/2ndDrive<\/strong><br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1102\" class=\"wp-image-12818\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_ftp-accounts_ftpAccounts_create2ndDriveUser.png\" alt=\"create 2nd drive ftp user\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_ftp-accounts_ftpAccounts_create2ndDriveUser.png 817w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_ftp-accounts_ftpAccounts_create2ndDriveUser-272x300.png 272w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/cpanel_ftp-accounts_ftpAccounts_create2ndDriveUser-768x846.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><br><br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Login to your server with the root user via <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/support\/server\/ssh\/how-to-login-ssh\/\" target=\"_blank\">SSH<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this example, we created our secondary FTP account on our <strong>example<\/strong> cPanel account. The actual settings for this FTP user are stored then in the <strong>example<\/strong> user\u2019s <strong>proftpd<\/strong> file which you can view with:<br><br> cat \/etc\/proftpd\/example <br><br>This will spit back all the current FTP account settings for this <strong>example<\/strong> cPanel user:<br><br><strong>2nddrive<\/strong>:$1$9Xp:502:501:<strong>example:\/home\/example\/public_html\/2ndDrive<\/strong>:\/bin\/ftpsh example:$1$nsk:502:501::\/home\/example:\/bin\/bash ftp::14:50::\/home\/example\/public_ftp:\/bin\/ftpsh example_logs:$1$nsk:502:501:example:\/usr\/local\/apache\/domlogs\/example:\/bin\/ftpsh <br><br>I\u2019ve trimmed the long password hashes so the text can fit above, but you should see I\u2019ve bolded the <strong>2ndDrive<\/strong> FTP user we created, and it belongs to the <strong>example<\/strong> cPanel user and the home directory is set to <strong>\/home\/example\/public_html\/2ndDrive<\/strong><br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now edit the <strong>\/etc\/proftpd\/example<\/strong> file using this command: <br><br><strong>vi \/etc\/proftpd\/example <\/strong><br><br>Now use your <strong>arrow keys<\/strong> to navigate in the <strong>vi<\/strong> text-editor to the <strong>\/home\/<\/strong> line of our new FTP user. <br><br>Hit \u201c<strong>i\u201d<\/strong> on your keyboard to enter <strong>INSERT<\/strong> mode, and edit this line to read<br><br> <strong>\/home2\/example\/2ndDrive<\/strong> <br><br>Then hit <strong>ESC<\/strong> to exit <strong>INSERT<\/strong> mode, and then <strong>Shift ZZ<\/strong> to save the file<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"97\" class=\"wp-image-100020\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/edit-etc-proftpd-ftp-path.gif\" alt=\"Edit etc proftpd ftp path\"><br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, you\u2019ll want to create the directory on the secondary hard drive for this FTP user with: <br><br><strong>mkdir -p \/home2\/example\/2ndDrive <\/strong><br><br>You also want to sure the <strong>example<\/strong> cPanel username has ownership of this directory with: <br><br><strong>chown example.example \/home2\/example\/2ndDrive -R<\/strong><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now if you connect with this 2ndDrive@example.com FTP user in your FTP client, you\u2019ll be presented with a blank directory, and you can start uploading files there.
