When you receive an email from another email address, InMotion Hosting email servers run a RBL checker<\/em><\/strong> on the receiving email against any known DNS Blacklisting<\/strong><\/em> companies. The RBL checker<\/em> is different than Spam Assassin<\/a> or Box Trapper<\/a> which is only for filtering and removing emails that go through to your server.<\/p>\n

What is an RBL?<\/h2>\n

An RBL is an Real-Time Black List or also called, a DNS-based Blackhole List (DNSBL), or Blacklist. Companies like Spamcop<\/a> maintain a database of IP addresses that are reported by consumers as being spam originators. When the server scans an email and finds the sender to be on a blacklist the email bounces to the sender<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why does InMotion use an RBL checker<\/em>?<\/h2>\n

Using DNS Blacklisting<\/em> companies is an industry standard<\/strong>. Not only does InMotion Hosting uses DNS Blacklists<\/em>; but, most email servers in the World use them. The DNS Blacklist<\/em> company will keep a list of known IP addresses<\/em> that have been reported and verified and sending spam from the server. This forces companies to regulate their servers to prevent hacks<\/a> and malicious activity from happening on their server.<\/p>\n

Can the RBL checker<\/em> check be disabled?<\/h2>\n

We will not disable the DNS Blacklist<\/em> checking on our Shared servers<\/a>. The DNS Blacklist<\/em> is the most effective way to keep our shared server customers from receiving unwanted spam from unknown senders.<\/p>\n

VPS<\/a> and Dedicated servers<\/a> on the other hand can have the DNS Blacklist<\/em> check disabled in their EXIM<\/a><\/em> software. This will require root access<\/a> to change and knowledge of the ssh command line<\/a>. Our Support<\/a> can disable the RBL checker<\/em> for you if you cannot.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT!<\/strong> We do not recommend disabling DNS Blacklist<\/em> checking on any server as this will allow any email IP of known spammers<\/a> to email your server.<\/p>\n

Can Domain or IP addresses be Whitelisted<\/em>?<\/h2>\n

We will not whitelist any domain or IP address that is on a known blacklist on our shared servers. Unfortunately, if a sender is on any known DNS Blacklist<\/em>, they will need to contact their email service provider to have the IP delisted or contact the DNS Blacklisting<\/em> company them self to have the IP delisted.<\/p>\n

On VPS and Dedicated server, you can whitelist IP’s and domains for your EXIM<\/em> to allow particular IP’s through to your server. This is a root access<\/a> change and would need ssh command line<\/a> experience.
